Seems like we're falling out of the habit of talking about shows ... so, in a break from Halloween BRAWL, I'll play.

- At some point, I'm going to quit mentioning the openers, they're always good, sometimes, great. I liked this one ... replayed Reloaded for us a bit and focused in on what was a quick, interesting BRAWL. We move forward.

- Good showing for LEYENDA DE OCHO here ... haven't seen the JTTS that is Plain Brown Rapper before. I think DE OCHO could be destined for some good things in the NFW ... GPX will no doubt heat up and toss some fun Ben's way. Glad to have you around, man!

- Cameron Cruise! Legion! Good match, I say. LEGION seems to be involved in much of the NFW chaos and, from a mental and storyline standpoint, it fits him perfectly. I think it's got to go somewhere long-term, but, for the short, is working. Bobby Jack and Cameron feuding would make sense ... they've been involved with one another, but haven't had a balls out feud IMO. GG's been busy with JJ, Dorchester, and Troy. Siegel's been ... I half-expected Mayfield to switch focus toward THC, but it looks like he's more focused on the Windham Clan scraps right now. That'll get explained/settled it shortly, I'm sure.

- IMPULSE fires back at all his haters - wrestlers, fans, whoever. If I took anything from this promo, it was that he's solely focused on Castor. Him addressing all of JJ's claims and entertaining the fan's opinion was good and fine, but the last seven or eight lines made it for me. CASTOR/IMPULSE ... looking forward to it.

- #1 CONTENDER FOR EMTs - This is a good match, has history behind it, and obviously the top contenders are an important spot. Atken/Alexander deserve that spot, if you ask me. I like the dynamic between the two and, while I think JN and I did a nice job with PALOOZA, Malik/JB just aren't a great fit as top contenders. JB's embroiled in a gigantic feud with Dorchester ... Malik's got Blaine/Hellfire issues. I think that makes them a great alliance, however. The match itself and specifically the ending setup/pushed along quite a few things.

1) Atken/Alexander are the real deal ... clearly hung with the top contenders (plus they were in the Semis for PALOOZA.) Looking forward to them going after Superfly Express. With Ford, Chris, Voss, and Colin involved, it should be a helluva ride!
2) JB/Dorchester heats up ... Stratton's a vicious mother. JB is getting beat up on ... might as well run his ribs through a meat grinder.
3) Hellfire Club show up in a big way ... take over a main event (BRAWL or not) and show that this problem isn't going to go away and it's a dangerous problem to have.
4) Malik/Blaine? Might see the ex-partners go to war soon. I know THC is all about the titles, but I'm hoping that Malik presses the issue.

I think Katz wrote this one ... good job. Short, but it's a building block!

I love the intros to these shows. They're boss. And I love the lay-out of them. Reminds me of a cool version of WWE Experience or something.

I love de Ocho being in NFW. This was a cool showing for him though he didn't nail nearly as many Actualizers as I had him land in his IGC exhibition it's awesome to see Ben here in NFW. Leyenda de Ocho is my favourite character of 2012 and it's great to have Ben on board.

The Legion-Cruise match was cool. I enjoyed where it was going and seeing Bobby Jack interject himself. It was cool to see Mayfield getting his hands dirty but I kinda felt like I needed more post-humous stuff as to why he did it looking at it. I really want to see Cruise and Bobby Jack progress into a proper feud. It's been teased at for a while now so I think we're ready to see that happen properly.

I enjoyed the Impulse segment. I like the originality of the character. I like how I can't compare him to wrestlers I've grown up watching. This promo was necessary in my opinion. For Impulse to have a good run he needs to get on the stick more. I can't remember if I've said that before or thought that, but he does. Coz wrestlers who challenge for the World title that don't appear legitimate to me. And Impulse brandishing a mic and addressing the naysayers and the crowd is a great step in the right direction and I am legit interested to seeing how this feud between Strife and Impulse pans out given all the chicanery in which Strife just went through with Dane. Great work, Pete. Great segment.

The main event was epic. I enjoyed it a lot and really liked how it developed the relationship between Phil Atken and Teddy Alexander. Looking forward to seeing how Atken/Alexander go heading toward the Superfly Express and their belts. I agree with Biron in that Malik & Bryant make a better alliance than a tag team. It makes a Helluva a lot of sense but it shouldn't mean they don't tag together here and there. I think there's a cool relationship in that that's really already gelled between them. Hellfire Club putting their hand in the action was expected and delivered as it should have been. Really put their stamp down as being the stable to contend with in NFW if you wanna go anywhere near the top.

Kudos, sir. Well played!

As far as JB/Malik tagging together, definitely, I think it needs to/will keep happening. I guess my better alliance than a tag team could be switched to ... they aren't the prime choice for #1 Contenders. On that note, I really like how Atken/Alexander came up short at PALOOZA, but, we've seen a lot happen since then with them. Starting to trust each other ... becoming a team. I totally dug your Brother's Keeper piece and this team has a TON of potential. Have a feeling that JB/Malik/Atken/Alexander haven't crossed paths for the last time either!

A note before my thoughts on the card: as a relative newcomer, I'm not 100% caught up on all NFW storylines in play

INTRO:

Nicely done, gives glimpses and previews of what to expect for the rest of the show without going too spoilery. Good recap of previous events/preview of things to come for tonight's show.

OCHO VS. PBR

Suck it Plain Brown Rapper!!1!~ Thank you for the kind words, Biron and Voss (*for the record, the best character of 2012 is painGRILLE). The GPX is sure to be fun going forward, and Ocho is definitely in a unique spot in NFW as outsider-turned-roster-member. Hopefully it'll be an interesting twist on the "outsider targeting a popular name in the company", since Ocho's not a heel. No matter what, it should be a good time. And since Ocho doesn't really have a personal history with anyone on the roster (except Phil Atken, but for something outside the fed), I'm excited to see what directions he gets taken in the early going. Looking forward to it!

CRUISE VS. LEGION

Interesting matchup, though I wonder if Legion's mic work would have been more effective if it was Legion's own words, rather than Natrone Rice's voiceover giving an overview. It's always good when two guys with a lot of frustration duke it out, even if that frustration isn't necessarily tied to their opponent. And then, minor chaos hits, which gives the match a direction for feuds going forward, always good. Will be interested to see the fallout with Bobby Jack/Hellfire Club from this. I laughed a little when it mentioned Legion and Cameron Cruise not happy after the match, because I'm pretty sure Cameron Cruise has never been happy.

IMPULSE ON THE MIC

I am SO HAPPY the Heel Bible got set afire at the end, in large part because I (like Impulse) was getting tired of seeing it around. Solid solid work, and it gives you the sense that he's going to be a major threat to Strife's title. I like the mindset of "I don't care if you think I'm a face or a heel, I'm going to take care of business regardless of what people think of me". Very in-control. Good work.

ANDERSON/BRYANT VS. ATKEN/ALEXANDER

I'll admit I'm not as familiar with Malik Anderson/Jack Bryant as I am with Phil Atken/Teddy Alexander. I do see in the way the early match was written how Atken/Alexander just feel more like a team with an established history than Anderson/Bryant. And EVEN MORE CHAOS! Love the Hellfire Club establishing their presence even more. Atken getting more and more pins - it's almost time for a nickname change to "Fortunate" Phil Atken. The dude's got momentum, and I love Atken and Alexander together. The deck is stacked against Bryant for his next match, and this thing's gotta go to 5 matches.

A short, entertaining read that is nice to have in between the larger cards. Good work, team.

Quick and to the point, just like we need to be right now.

Digging the Anderson/Bryant team but it needs to be handled very carefully right now and possibly put on the back burner. Bryant's main focus should be Dorchester, with a tag team thing to come later when the singles stuff has played out the string. But it's a good way to give both wrestlers a breather in between. And I know it made sense because of HFC's history with Malik and JB but I hope this isn't the start of a trend of HFC interfering in at least one match per card, since the heel stable run in was played out long before the Windham Clan showed up. But I will never argue against anything that puts Phil Atken in a main event, and Teddy Alexander is definitely making himself known in a big way, just the same.

Glad people seem to like my Impulse spot, I've had a lot of that in my head for a long time but it didn't seem to make sense until now. And it's just the tip of the iceberg.

Not much to say about the rest of the card, Leyenda is entertaining and I'm glad he seems to be sticking around. Legion has been firmly entrenched for some time and I'm glad to see him getting more recognition. I'm also glad to see Bobby Jack Windham sticking around. He was the least interesting of the Clan to me, but now that he's been abandoned by everyone I hope we see him try to figure out what to do with his life.

Pete, I think you have timed it perfectly for Impulse finding his voice. It makes perfect sense to me for him to take this next step as a wrestler to openly get on the stick and for me as a wrestling fan looking in it is the icing on the cake for where I want to see Impulse go. Kudos my friend. Looking forward to seeing you develop that more.

Great card.

I just have a few thoughts on Impulse.

I think Impulse needs to go heel. I think there's such an amazing story to be told with a heel Impulse. I think, in Pete's hands, a heel Impulse would be the hottest character in NFW. And it can be done and keep in Impulse's character without cheating.

A heel who doesn't -- REFUSES -- to cheat is a really great idea that I don't remember being done anywhere.

Right now, Knox vs. Castor is simply a rematch between two guys. One has the title and is on a total rampage and is rapidly climbing the all-timers list. The other is his longtime rival (and they had a great rivalry) looking to get the big prize. A match for the title is always great. But there's so much more potential here.

I think the story should be that Castor has runaway popularity, despite being a jerk who has said and done terrible things over the years. Yet here's Impulse, who has stuck to his guns and refuses to cheat, cast in his shadow/getting booed by some (not all) fans. Why not have that get to Impulse and have it motivate him?

I've written this as JJ but it's something that I feel too. Impulse does have a lot of heel tendencies and there's no way I can see NFW fans liking him. The stuff w/ The Hellfire Club in the NFW Films thread DID spin truths in a way that did look whiny and excuse making. Impulse jump-piled on Eric Dane immediately after Dane's loss to Castor. And, in-general, I think he comes off as a very self-important little snot. Those aren't likable traits.

I also think that the NFW fans are like ECW fans. Do they appreciate Impulse's athletic ability and workrate? Yeah. Absolutely. But I think they would have booed him out of the building for not hitting JJ with a chair when he had the chance. He stuck to his morals but deprived the fans of what they wanted him to do.

Great heels always have a point in what they say. An Impulse who hates the fans for cheering Castor Stryfe who reminds them that he has never cheated or taken a shortcut so THEY'RE bad people makes this into something really special. Pete and Billy are going to do a good job no matter what but if you add in that story to the mix it becomes really epic.

Some good points on Impulse there, GG.

As far as the THC/heel stable comments go ... heel stables will always do run-ins. It's been a staple in professional wrestling and always will be ... that's generally why a heel stable is a heel stable. They stack the odds in their favor, cheat to win, etc, etc. I expect run-ins from the THC ... I bet there will be more early on to show what's what, but we'll see.

Either way, good to see discussion back here.

The only problem with this, is that it's like when my fiancee reminds me of a really cool way I could have surprised her with flowers. And my reply is always, "Well, I can't do it now, you're expecting it! I'll wait until you forget..." I have successfully avoided buying her flowers for-fucking-ever. And Pete has successfully avoided turning Impulse heel forever!

Two things from me...

1) http://www.fwrestling.com/showthread.php?24371-Ask-Impulse-v-.183333333333333333 -- seriously, this many replies in here and 1 question from me? BUILD THE STORY.

2) NFW fans were like ECW fans in 2000 due to the size of the company and core fan following. I'd think it's greatly changed over the last 12 years into its own evolved fanbase, but since it's a "global" company I don't think it's 100% one way or another in terms of who gets booed. I'd imagine there's some dipshits that like JJ and mark for Peter. :)

Gregg, I think your logic is flawed and I'll explain why. You mention NFW being similar to ECW fans, well, knowing where you're from and knowing where and when you went to college I'm going to assume you're referring to the same ECW fans that I am - the 1994-1997 golden age fans. Yes, they cheered for the double tables matches, and the barbed wire matches and every time Sandman caned someone, but they also gave a standing ovation to the Malenko - Guerrero classic which was completely clean.

If you want to juxtapose the ECW fans against the WWF Attitude fans, keep in mind they also gave a standing ovation in 2001 to the first half of Kurt Angle vs. Chris Benoit, which was nothing but back and forth wrestling and had to compete with Dudleys vs. Hardys vs. E/C in the TLC three way for the tag belts.

On that subject, you said there has never been a heel who has been a highly talented, accomplished wrestler who refuses to use weapons, I counter with Kurt Angle's first run, at least from his debut to his first World Title. The difference is twofold:

1: Kurt Angle was completely condescending to the fans, while Impulse talks to them as equals.

2: Kurt Angle was, predictably, only friendly with heels, while Impulse has, in so many words, told the entire NFW roster, face, heel, and otherwise, that if they want to give him hell they can go fuck themselves.

On the subject of Impulse's "self righteous snot" -ism, that's not something I've ever shied away from. He's never identified as a hero or a villain. I write him as a straight babyface with human flaws: he's got an ego regarding his wrestling that he tries to overcome, that he thinks he's a better pure wrestler than anyone else in the industry, and he takes great pleasure in seeing people who disrespect him fail.

On that note, let's talk about Eric Dane. Eric Dane is the NFW's equivalent of Kevin Sullivan, in that he is the least sympathetic character in the company. In essence, he came in, insulted Impulse for not beating Castor Strife for the World Title, told the entire fed 'This is how it's done, bitches,' then worked himself a sweet situation where he had every possible advantage and still lost the match.

NFW fans are like ECW fans in at least one respect, I think: they are fans of the promotion first, and their favorite wrestlers second. That's why JJ DeVille is such a good heel. Even more than the fact that he's an unlikable douche, he came in and said he's going to destroy the NFW.

Impulse has been consistent in many ways that are ignored by the wrestlers who have decided he's a fraud, but one of the most prevalent is that he's always acted in what he considered to be the best interest of the NFW in and of itself, which is why I think - and have always written him - as having the majority of fan support.

Beyond that, I don't believe in such two dimensional labels as 'face' and 'heel.' I touched on this in the mic spot on the show, there are always going to be fans who will cheer and boo who they want regardless of who is supposed to be the 'face' or the 'heel.' For example, WM13 did not automatically make me a Stone Cold fan and hate Bret Hart. I was a Bret Hart fan until the end of the road, and didn't become an Austin fan until years later when I checked out what he was all about. TAZ was the biggest thing that ever hit ECW in the glory days and I don't think he ever used weapons or broke the rules. He went from the biggest heel in the company at N2R 1995 to the biggest face in the company by the time he was World Champion and he never changed a thing about himself: the fans respected his work.

The real bottom line is that there's no reason that I can see for Pulse to 'go heel' since he's going to be who he is whether the fans like him or not. But the NFW fans' first priority is wrestling: they prefer the 'sports' to the 'entertainment' and that's where Pulse shines.

I don't expect everyone to agree with that, but much like Impulse, I don't really give a shit.

I definitely don't believe the NFW fans would be booing Impulse right now, by and large. There would be a segment that does, but people largely respect his ability. You know how I know this? Because that's how the forum has reacted to him. Fans, forum members, we're all people, and our reactions aren't very complex.

I don't think you can discard the terms heel and face. There are tweeners for sure, but tweeners are simply not doing anything to turn people for or against them. Stone Cold was an anti-hero, which is still a type of face. If he joined the Corporation, do you think fans would still cheer him? I doubt it. This is essentially my issue with people who claim their characters are "heel" but make them at cool at every turn. People don't boo cool - that's why it's 'cool'. The only way a cool dude gets boo'd is if he does something really fucked up - which isn't cool.

There is a sort of gray area where a character hasn't become so cool that people are ready to totally embrace him, but doesn't do enough dastardly things to get him fully boo'd either. Eventually, this character goes in one direction or the other. The nWo became faces, so WCW got smart and split them up into heel and face factions (Hollywood vs. Wolfpack). Stone Cold became a face after the Bret Hart match; Bret became a heel. You can only be in the gray area for so long. Cool heels don't stay heels for that long.

This is the opposite of how I feel about Impulse. I think he's still got enough cred that people cheer him, but he's certainly not as well liked as he once was because of all the sniping he does, and the fact that his girlfriend did more to stand up to JJ than he did. I'm not telling you what to do with Impulse, but I'm saying, if he continues in one direction or the other, the make-believe crowd would eventually decide to like or dislike him. Based on the segment you wrote, I think it's clear Impulse is going stronger in the face direction, but I agree with Gregg in the sense that certain traits of Impulse's would have made it very, very easy for him to turn heel.

But I don't think you should do what people think or expect you to do. Keeping us guessing is probably the best thing.

Pete --

You did a good job explaining Impulse's motivations and side of the story. Thanks.

I'm looking at it from a fan's perspective. Would I be entertained by Impulse's matches? Yes. But I wouldn't be able to look past the stuff we've talked about on here with him -- not hitting JJ, Rosie standing up to JJ more, his smugness. I would hate the hell out of that dude.

When you're writing more than a traditional character, there's going to be some polarizing reactions. My criticism of Impulse isn't how you're writing the character. My criticism is how the fans reactions to Impulse are being written. I'm not buying a "sea of Team Impulse" shirts or some boos. Do I see him having fans who respect his work? Yeah. But I also see a lot of fans boo him not because they think he's boring, but because he's a little shit.

So yeah, keep doing the character how you're doing him. I wouldn't have it any other way -- you know what you're doing by now and you know where you rank on my all-time list! But I just think the reactions to him should be written differently.

I'll pipe in since I recently went to a VERY long RAW show. Biggest moment wasn't Ryback carrying around... who DID he wrestle that night? Tensai? Nope, it was that Swedish dude (I don't even care what his name was) who got mad props by a decent contingent of the fans when he deadlifted that BIG dancing dude... the one w/ the two dancers.

Can anyone tell I'm tired and don't pay nearly as much attention to wrestling as I used to?

My point? You will have a contingent of fans who mark at Impulse's work rate. Zigler, who is clearly heel, sold a bunch of t-shirts at the show (one of which went to my son). CM Punk gets booed, sure, but he gets as many cheers. Again, workrate.

Regardless of what Impulse says or does, a decent group will be cheering for him because of his skill, ignoring the gimmick entirely.

With that said, I do like the idea of Impulse telling the fans who boo him "I don't really care" (metaphorically speaking). It fits him and it's something I've felt for years (and wish they would've let us do w/ Hart/Austin). I wanted to root for Bret against the antihero because Austin was a punk jerk. In real sports (the non-scripted variety... or at least probably unscripted), we had Ali and Frazier.

And NFW has Impulse and Castor. Impulse is whiney and egotistical, but has a work ethic that forces people to respect him. Honestly, Impulse has much of Hart's old style with one major difference, Impulse can work a mic better. Castor is an egotistical punk who should be hated, but because he's worked his butt off, he will bring a contingent of fans too, both those who have watched him and like to see him get his moment (cause they remember loving him or loving to hate him back in the day) and those who like what they've seen now.

Sounds perfect to me! Go boys, go!

I like that our characters are complicated enough that there's reasons to both like or dislike.

I think Castor is getting face pop because he completed a program against Dane, and that he's the ULTRATITLE winner. In spite of all the jackass shit he gets up to, that really motivates people to like the character.

Impulse is himself, a very likable character. But I think ECW fans circa 1997 would absolutely hate him while also praising his work-rate. FUCK YOU IMPULSE would have to share space with THAT WAS AWESOME, and HOLY SHIT. Which among the praiseworthy and contemptible traits between either CASTOR and IMPULSE would really come down to any individual fan's preference, and what I think makes it really cool, is that I would expect our mythical fandom to be engaged in a lot of debate and argument over it. Demographics would play a big role too: I don't think it's hard to imagine that a younger crowd of men would dig Impulse, where folks older would find a lot more to loathe in the "punk kid".

Less complicated, and yet more, is that I think Rose is more likeable than Impulse for a majority of the people. Except for the small amount of folks who find Manic Pixie Dream Girls to be both mythical and obnoxious.

I think that Impulse is a little polarizing contributes greatly to the character's strengths. That we're interested enough to pay attention and evaluate it so closely means that the character is 100% successful, regardless of what your opinion is.

Castor couldn't go on being a top heel while the Windhams and JJ were wreaking havoc. Realistically, what could he have done to out-heel them at the time? JJ is over there digging up Dan Ryan's dead daughter - suddenly, breaking Impulse's neck doesn't seem so bad. JJ's antics even made Troy look like a tweener by comparison. Castor's tone became more "cool/badass" after that point, right around the NFW World Title tournament. When one stable puts the rest of the league in the position of defending the company against invading heels, the other bad guys start to look a lot less bad. It's the (early) nWo effect.

One more thing about Impulse that relates to the Windhams/JJ: Impulse would look a lot more faceish if JJ ever got his proper comeuppance, but he didn't (a superkick from Rose ain't proper comeuppance). JJ shits on Impulse constantly, and then gets one over on him. I don't think the JJ/Impulse feud has been good for the Impulse character, as a face. It worked better for Jack Bryant, because Jack got to look like a hero. Impulse post-JJ has been much stronger, and I think he'll be in good shape after this title match, win or lose. Same with Castor. It's going to be big.
