The Rain Never Stops..

::Jonathan Marx is sitting in the window looking outside at the rain washing away the snow on the ground in a dark house at twilight::

JONATHAN MARX: When I was a little boy, I watched my friends idolize wrestlers like Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat because while they were great wrestlers, they were also good people. He was the kind of person who people could get behind and root for.

I wish I could have bought into those illusions that people like Ricky Steamboat were good family men. But sadly I knew better because my father was a wrestler himself… No, he wasn’t one of those guys who got into drugs or drank excessively. No, he didn’t sleep around on my mother or at least he claims he didn’t. Yes, he brought home a huge salary and took care of us the best that he could. But wasn’t a good family man…

Was my dad there when I played my first soccer game? No. Was my dad there the first time I got straight As? No. Was my dad there when I fell off the jungle gym and broke my arm? No. He was too busy, wrestling. Sure he called every night and told me that he loved me, but that doesn’t erase the fact that he wasn’t there when I needed him. The wrestling business made him an absentee father.

Do I love my father? Yes I do. Do I know he is sorry that he couldn’t be there for me and my mother when I need him? Yes. But that doesn’t mean that he wasn’t a bad father to me when he was traveling on the road all of those nights.

My dad never attended a parent teacher conference. He never went we me on a field trip.

And there I sat watching my TV in 1989 watching Ricky Steamboat trying to pass himself off as a family man in order to get the fans behind him. It made me angry, very, very angry that he was making a mockery of our misery. All of those nights I lied in bed depressed because while every kid in America loved my dad, I could never be with him.

Was I selfish to want him for myself? Yes I was, but just because I was selfish doesn’t diminish the pain I felt. I hated wrestling. I hated what it did to my family and yet, my father was one of the better wrestling parents.

He didn’t push me into this sport. He wanted something better for me. He didn’t make me take steroids to bulk up to look like a bodybuilder. He didn’t mind that I didn’t take his name. He cares about my safety more than anything in the world despite being busy working in WFW management.

Things worked out for both of us, but when the time comes that I have a son of my own, I’m never going to step foot in that ring ever again because I want to be with him.

This sport of professional wrestling kills families Cliff. It is a cancer which doesn't care whose family it takes. Cliff, you are the man you claim to be, I ask you to stop making a mockery of the young Jonathan Marxs and your young daughter. Don’t do to her what my father did to me, be the better man and just walk away. You’ve made your money winning all of those titles, you don’t need to be here.

Because if you choose to stay, the choice will no longer be yours. I’m going to make you pay for the pain that the Ricky Steamboats of the world inflicted on me and after I lock you in that Marxism, I’m going to send you back to your little girl so you can be the father my dad wasn’t.

The Era of Marxism begins with you.
