With Paranoia V, perhaps the biggest Paranoia of them all, just a few months away, IWC will be counting down the weeks to the event with a very special look at the matches that made this show the biggest in all of wrestling. These are the matches that defined the ULW and the IWC, and set the standard for Paranoia. Hopefully what the world will witness in May will live up to the matches listed here, on our greatest Paranoia matches countdown.
10. Nathan Creed vs. Jackson Adams: Livewire Title
If you ever wondered what they meant by saying "putting your best foot forward" this match serves as a perfect example of that generic phrase. Not saying that either man looks like a foot, although their bodily odors are strikingly similar. What I mean is that this bout between bitter rivals opened the show at Paranoia III and almost stole the whole telecast with a fast paced, technical, and heated exchange. The story going into this contest, which serves as a brief glimpse of what would be expected in the future, involved Nathan Creed dumping his girlfriend Krissie McMorris for trying to not only control his career, but control his life, via keeping him away from his family. As a result of this romantic turmoil, Jackson Adams stepped in and utilized it to his advantage by getting Krissie McMorris to join him. In the end the mind games didn't work out, because after a grueling back and forth encounter, Nathan Creed emerged victorious over Jackson Adams and became the new Livewire Champion. After the bout, Adams laid out Krissie McMorris who he blamed for his loss, and the feud between himself and Nathan would continue from there until it ended in a classic ladder match at Retribution. To kick off the show and have the fans buzzing about your match throughout the rest of the night speaks for itself and proves why this bout should be on the countdown of the greatest in Paranoia history.
9. Chapel vs. Killjoy: Japanese Death Match
The fans of the IWC and the classic ULW would be hard pressed to try and block from their memories the gore they witnessed when the rules book was thrown out the window and Killjoy and Chapel put on the greatest monster movie in Hollywood that had ever been produced. Mystery surrounded the build to this contest, but everyone knew when the stipulation of "Japanese Death Match" was announced, that they'd witness one of the most barbaric bouts ever. Far be it from Killjoy or Chapel to disappoint. After Killjoy spear headed the investigation into a disgusting backstage assault on Demona during what was suppose to be Chapel's wedding night, the War Angel grew increasing flustered that no headway had been made in revealing who laid out his bride. Killjoy kept reassuring the King of Monsters that he'd find out who was behind the attack come hell or high water, but shocked the world when he revealed himself to be the culprit. As a result there was a series of gorish, violent assaults between both men leading up to what would be the single most grotesque bout perhaps ever seen in the ULW. They not only tore each other apart but also tore down the house under Japanese Death Match rules, and it came down to a bloodied, barely breathing Chapel, crucifix bombing Killjoy through a flaming table to finally put the match to an end.
8. AWOL vs. Jackson Adams
It should be no surprise to anyone that Jackson Adams would make this list more than once, given just how loveable that he is. One man who didn't find Jackson all that adorable, was his former teammate in the Empire, AWOL. The issues between the two would escalate over the span of an entire year and finally conclude at Paranoia IV. It commenced thanks to Mark Comeau's hatred of AWOL for destryoing Johnny Kingdom at Paranoia III, which led him to get into cahoots with Jackson Adams that would lead to the formation of the Alpha Generation. Adams' goal was to take the World title from around AWOL's waist, and put him on the shelf just like Kingdom had been. However, he wouldn't be the one to take the strap from his former associate, as Desolation swooped in to claim the gold at Retribution, which was followed by AWOL's retirement from the ring. When all hope looked lost for Adams and AWOL to get into the ring against each other, AWOL was shockingly announced as the new General Manager of the IWC, and immediately started to you with his old friend. After Jackson lacerated the GM with a steel chair, it was set and there was no going back. At Paranoia IV they put on a match that threatened to steal the show, and had a plethora of false finishes, including one that was overturned by Sheryl Gray due to Mark Comeau's interference. In the end it all came down to the dangerous kicks of AWOL to finally finish off Adams, rendering him unconscious.
7. Robin Brooks vs. Nathan Creed
This ladies and gentlemen, wasn't your grandpa's love story. Actually, the thought of my grandpa being in a love story is actually kind of sick. The point is this rivalry developed due to Nathan Creed's affections for Robin Brooks, affections that were not returned. Just when it seemed that Nathan would finally have Robin in his loving embrace she was tricked into sleeping with Hurse, which through a wrench into Creed's plans. Brooks fell for Hurse and as thus infuriated the Future enough to lay her out with a uranage back breaker. Robin wouldn't take this lying down, and finally stood up to Nathan in the form of a one on one match for the X-Class title at Paranoia IV. In their match they displayed some aerial daredevilry, and captivated the audience by going back and forth repeatedly, building to a finish no one would be able to forget. When the referee's hand slapped the canvas for the three count, Brooks' arm was raised in victory, and in her clutches was the X-Class title belt, a championship that Nathan had held for over a year.
6. AWOL vs. Johnny Kingdom: World Heavyweight Title
It would only be fitting for yet another match to make this list that is also featured on the top 10 greatest feuds of all times. And let's be frank, when you throw AWOL and Johnny Kingdom into the ring with each other, with the gloves removed and virtually no rules, you'll guaranteed to witness an absolute classic. That's just what this match became, a bout that would live in lore, you know, be all legendary and junk. These two always had a deep seated hatred for one another as it related to their affections for the same woman, and it was this hatred that led them to face off for the World Heavyweight title at Paranoia III. They busted up their bodies, they spilt buckets of their blood, and at the same time put on a technical wrestling clinic all in the sake of walking away with the World title. After battling for almost an hour, Kingdom's past Paranoia luck would come to a screeching halt as AWOL was finally able to dethrone him and put an end to his legendary reign as Champion. On top of that he put an end to Kingdom's career as a regular performer. This bout will be remember for a number of reasons, not all of them good, but one way or another it will live on the memories of all the fans around the world as perhaps the greatest Paranoia main event ever.
5. Psycho vs. Killjoy
In terms of sheer violence there may be no greater display than when the Survival of the Fittest match took place at Paranoia II. Both Killjoy and Psycho were involved in a feud that had spanned several companies and many years, so it was only fitting that they would collide at ULW's greatest event of the year. It was also fitting that it transpire in a bout that originated from the sick, depraved, diseased mind of Killjoy, Survival of the Fittest. The ropes were replaced with razor wire, and a hanging cage was suspended just off to the side of the ring to provide for any dives both men decided to pull off. There wouldn't be much high flying from the cage, just one giant leap that would live in ULW infamy, in the form of Killjoy giving Psycho the reality all the way down to the ring below, which broke under their weight and due to the sheer force of the impact. It would continue to escale from there and lead to a chair riot in which the whole ring was submerged in steel thrown in by the fans and used to inflict greater damage on both men's bodies. Somehow, even after all their blood was lost, their bodies were bruised and battered, Killjoy won the contest and ended the feud with Psycho. Ironically enough after this disturbing foray into violence, both men are actually poised to battle for the Tag Team Titles. For more on this rivalry please check out the top 10 feuds article under the spotlight section.
4. Weapon's Lair: AWOL vs. Daemon Frost vs. Hellkat vs. Pulse vs. Andre vs. Stinger X-2 vs. Curtis Jack
Paranoia I would set the tone for what you'd expect from the ULW and the IWC throughout the coming years, and it did so by providing one of the most legendary matches ever dreamed up, the Weapon's Lair. The bout followed a simple formula, there would be three cages stacked on top of one another, each cage filled with more violent weaponry to utilized the higher you got. The point of fighting through these cages would be to reach the World Heavyweight Championship, the coveted strap hanging above the ring, the winner being forced to pull it down and for their feet to touch the outside of the bottom cell with the strap in their possession. However, throw in seven of the most twisted individuals to ever step foot in the ULW, and you have yourself a recipe for disaster. Filled with insane spots, such as Andre Bates being chokeslammed through all three cages, and Hellkat performing in a football helmet and padding, this Weapon's Lair match would prove why Paranoia just wasn't any event, and why it would become a phenomenon.
3. Johnny Kingdom vs. Lethal Weapon
There's a reason that many refer to Paranoia IV as the greatest Paranoia of them all, and this match was a leading contributor to that notion. These two had been involved in some very bitter, vicious exchanges of rhetoric for years, and it seemed inevitable that they would finally square off someplace, somewhere, and turn their words into physicality. Something always kept the two apart though in terms of in ring competition, rather it be scheduling conflicts or outright refusal to face each other. That was until the stars aligned and enough money was thrown at both men, enchanting them enough to consider the prospect of doing battle at the biggest event of them all. They would finally lock up at Paranoia IV, and there would be no more room to talk as a result. Lethal came in depending on his strong European style influences while Kingdom went with his American Strong skills. When these styles clashed it led to one of the greatest matches in Paranoia history, one that would receive a well deserved standing ovation from the sold out crowd. Kingdom emerged victorious after thirty minutes of pure wrestling and Lethal could certainly leave the ring on that night with his head held high.
2. Lethal Weapon vs. Orlando Cruze
All those packed into that building in Hollywood on the faitful night of Paranoia III didn't know what to expect as they took their seats and prepared themselves for the long road ahead. They didn't know if Paranoia III would be capable of surpassing it's predocessors, if they would get their money's worth. But as soon the bell rang and Orlando Cruze and Lethal Weapon found themselves standing mono-a-mono, all their doubts would go flying out the window. To say that these two men put on a classic would be an understatement, as they set a high bar for all future Paranoia performances. It was an epic bout truly deserving of the 2006 Match of the Year Award. It was a match that went past the half hour mark and had the fans on their feet throughout most of it, as both men kicked out of each other's finishers, then used their opponent's own finishers against them, yet it still wasn't enough. It didn't appear that either man would be capable of finishing off their rival, as they both utilized everything in their arsenals to obtain victory. Just when it seemed that the crowd would be watching these two battle all night long, which they certainly wouldn't have minded, Orlando finally finished Weapon off with a twisting Rock Bottom from the top rope. After the bout both men shook hands in a true display of class and honor, realizeing that this contest would live on in the minds of fans for many years to come.
1. MWAHAHAHAHAHA
Did you actually think I'd feed your egoes by announcing a number one match in this countdown? I'm not going to give some of you that warm, exciting feeling of being at the top. You don't deserve to find out what the number one match in Paranoia history is, you don't even deserve to exist. But I will let you in on what will be the greatest moments in Paranoia history, one shall be the conclusion of Johnny Kingdom's career at the hands of Silencer, and the other will be another abysmal failure on Orlando Cruze's part to regain the World title. There, are you happy now? I sure hope not.
