Bio
Gary Barber began his career chasing after his elder brother, the legendary Mitch “Fantomas” Barber, who’s exploits as a rudo in the lucha libre scene redefined the sport. Gary was mentored by his brother, as well as “The Berkshire Butcher” Ian McDaniel’s, a legendary British wrestler known for his brutal style and seeming immortality. The combination of styles gave young Gary a unique high-flying style that was based in hard-hitting, old fashioned wrestling. This sort of flexibility with styles meant he could hang in the ring with just about anyone, combined with his natural skill for the sport, it was clear that this was the makings of a future star in the sport.
And so our hero began his quest for superstardom, under his own name for the time being, and it did not take him too long to find himself a job in the then-dying territorial scene in the US. Starting in Borderlands Wrestling Alliance, Gary quickly became well-known for his flashy moves and charisma, teaming with a similar superstar Danny Zane, they captured the BWA Tag Championships and held them for nearly a year. Even though the two never quite got along on a personal level, their matches were always the best on the card, which ruffled the feathers of some of the veterans the wrong way. And as such, internal politics in the BWA lead Gary to question his place in the company, but it was around that time that he got a try out for All Japan Pro-Wrestling.
Due to the hellish training that he received at the hands of his brother and McDaniel’s, Gary surprised the people who came to see him try out with his stamina and durability in the ring and he was taken to the Land of the Rising Sun where he was eventually teamed up with “The Dazzler” Dave Tuck, a man who would become a life-long friend outside the ring, and a brutal rival inside of it. And once again tag gold found it’s way into his hands, but being tired of doing a solo act, and convinced by management at the time that he was too small for the heavyweight division, he defected with a few other wrestlers to the then-booming Frontier Martial-Arts Wrestling, or FMW, it was there that his career would take a turn towards the extreme.
FMW was, of course, one of the hallmarks of what was referred to in those days as Garbage Wrestling, hardcore wrestling so violent and creative that the old guard didn‘t quite know what to make of it. It didn‘t seem like quite the fit for Gary until after a long discussion with his brother, he decided to also take the Fantomas hood and take on a new identity. However this was not the simple task of putting on a mask, as the entity Fantomas was not simply just a persona that one could assume, but a dark, arcane force that corrupted the mind of the user. A blood pact must be made, and was made, and soon enough the once peaceful minded Gary was the most violent wrestler in the sport.
Returning to North America when the time was right, Gary finally teamed with his brother, a dream of his since he was a child, claiming gold in AAA until his violent ways proved too much for them and he was forced out of the company. Returning to Japan, he joined the burgeoning Pro Wrestling Jigoku, an even more extreme hardcore wrestling organization than any that came before, and some would believe since. In that place, the demonic side of Gary rose to prominence and he claimed his first singles gold. However, back in Mexico, his brother and mentor Mitch was found dead. This brought a crashing halt to everything, as the house of cards Gary built for himself began to crumble.
Using this moment to try to reclaim his life, Gary fought the entity inside the mask and won, regaining his humanity, but the damage was done, his marriage to his second wife had failed and his brother was dead. Trying to get himself back on the right track, he returned to Mexico, claiming singles gold in CMLL, and doing quite well for himself as a technico for the first time in years. A lucrative contract, though, would change everything forever as he joined Anarchy Rules Wrestling, and met up with his old friend Dave Tuck where they would renew their years-old rivalry.
This also was the beginning of his friendship and professional rivalries with Vindicater and Rob Stallion, when the ARW closed, Gary had already been contracted in the XWA and recommended these three where they were also given contracts as well. As he had done everywhere else, Gary shot through the ranks of the XWA, beating legendary wrestlers like Matthew Bright and Hammer, on his way to singles gold there as well. But unfortunately, the XWA also closed, and having nursed a serious injury for the last year of his stay there, Gary realized the time had come for him to hang up the hood and call it a career.
And so after a short stay in Real Deal Wrestling, Gary Barber called it a career, and turned his eyes towards helping the future of the sport. He began the Fantom Dojo, a place where he would train the next generation of superstars, and from that came global sensations like JL Willis and Craig Williams. He had also saved up quite some money in his time on the road and decided to try his hand behind the scenes for a while and so Badlands Pro Wrestling was born. With the help of long-time friend, JC Michaels, the BLPW opened it’s doors and offered an alternative to the wrestling scene.
With innovative matches and shows like the King of Philadelphia tournament, Gary and JC’s vision of wrestling caught on, attracting talent from all over the world. The BLPW had a very successful run for many years, until crooked financial backers stole the company from Gary, leaving him heartbroken and turning the trust of many of his former workers against him. It also lead to his third divorce, which sent him into a downward spiral that many thought he would never recover from. And so, he headed back to his home in Tucson Arizona to die, with a crippling addiction to pain killers and a heart full of despair.
And for some time he lived out a quiet life there, working at a record store until the call to arms came once again. Brought back together by Eternity, the Eternal Violence Connection re-connected Gary and JC, and forced both of them to fight and beat the addictions that were slowly killing them, and get back in the ring. The CWA was calling, and they answered the call, which leads us to this day where Gary Barber, now the Triple Crown Champion is at the top of his game once again. Who knows where the future will take him, but what we do know is that he has a lot left to do in this sport before he calls it a day.
