So, it begins...
Moments after Nitro has gone off the
air.
We're outside the office of Eric Bischoff, we know this
by the nameplate which sits on the door. We watch as many wrestlers
are heading out of the arena, pleased with their nights work. We see
Bret Hart walking down the corridor, still in his wrestling attire.
We heard from him earlier in the evening, speak to Gene Okerlund
about his return to the ring. He knocks on the door, waiting for a
response. He waits for several seconds but, decides to just walk
straight into the office.
Bischoff looks a bit
shocked.
[[ Eric Bischoff ]] What, you can't wait for me to give you a
response?
[[ Bret Hart ]] I've not got all night, Bischoff.
Bischoff shuts a folder which he was
writing on then throws it to the side, he looks back towards
Bret.
[[ Eric Bischoff ]]
Alright, what is it I can help you with
Bret?
[[ Bret Hart ]]
I've been here two weeks now on some sort
of waiting list, do you think that's what I signed up for?
[[ Eric Bischoff ]] Look, everyone has to go thro--
[[ Bret Hart ]] I'm not everyone, Bischoff. I'm Bret Hart, one of the
greatest professional wrestlers ever. You want to sign me up to sit
on a waiting list? That's not me. You should know that
already.
[[ Eric Bischoff ]]
Well, I've got some good news for
you.
Bret doesn't say anything else, he just
listens to what Bischoff has to tell him.
[[ Eric Bischoff ]] You're
off that waiting list. I'm throwing you straight into the deep end,
in a non title match against the United States Champion, Kurt Angle.
How'd you feel about that?
[[ Bret Hart ]] That's exactly what
I wanted to hear.
[[ Eric Bischoff ]]
I'm glad. Now, if that's
all...
Bret nods. He walks out of
the office, leaving Bishoff to continue with what he was doing
before Bret entered the room.
Our scene awakens once
again, we see Bret Hart standing in front of us on his own this
time. It's not clear where he is exactly but, that doesn't matter.
He's wearing his trademark leather jacket with pink shades, looking
amazing. He looks confident as he stares intently at the camera,
waiting for his cue to go.
It's Time.
[[ Bret Hart ]] You know, through my entire career.. I've seen
wrestlers use drugs to stop the pain, use the drugs just so they can
go to sleep at night without hurting. Early in my career, I used to
do exactly the same thing. I'd take countless pills, just so I
wouldn't ache.
He pauses for a
moment.
[[ Bret Hart ]]
I saw what those pills were doing to men
like The Dynamite Kid, it basically crippled him. It all happened
because he couldn't feel a thing, he didn't know that his body was
about to fail on him. This is what is coming for Kurt Angle, a man
who needs exactly the same thing to get through one match. Do you
think you can go for much longer, Kurt? We both know that you won't
be able to, it's just not possible for it to
happen.
Bret shakes his
head.
[[ Bret Hart ]]
You're only going to end up like The
Dynamite Kid, Kurt. You'll be a shell of the man you once were, this
is the time to bow out of wrestling. I'm going to give you a
masterclass in wrestling, I'll show you exactly why I'm the greatest
wrestler that has ever stepped into the ring. It's common knowledge,
everybody knows that Bret Hart gives his all in every match. My fans
expect a performance from me, Kurt. They exepct me to go out to that
ring, and put on a great match. This is what I've always done, and
it'll be no different on Nitro.
He
sounds confident for someone who hasn't stepped into the ring for a
while, Bret continues to speak.
[[ Bret Hart ]] I've heard
everything, Kurt. I hear how you're now supposed to be the best
wrestler around, no one is supposed to be able to handle that. Let
me tell you something, Kurt. The only reason people think that is
because I wasn't around, if I had been.. They wouldn't have given
you a second thought. I've waited long enough to claim my spot on
the roster, Kurt. I've been annoyed.. watching someone like you take
all the glory. You're the United States Champion, I'm sitting at
home thinking; How?
Bret paces
around.
[[ Bret Hart ]]
It's a fair question,
really.
He's
right.
[[ Bret Hart ]]
I can't even begin to imagine who you
beat for that title.. as from where I'm sitting, you're nothing
special. I don't know how you've managed to hold onto it for as long
but, I promise you that if I ever get the chance.. I'll take it.
It's not Kane who you need to be worried about this week, Kurt.. I'm
the man standing across from you in that ring. I've no doubt in my
ability to perform, I'll perform like I've never been out of the
ring. This is my final run at it, I'm not going to make any mistakes
this time around. I've got an understanding with Eric Bischoff,
there won't be any surprises that I don't know
about.
He's obviously meaning the
screwjob.
[[ Bret
Hart ]] It didn't take me long to
decide to come back to wrestling, it really didn't. I've been
thinking about it for a while now, it only took the right place to
come along for me to do it. I'm going to put the Hart name back in
the spotlight, we'll stand once again as the greatest wrestling
family of all time. I lost Owen to this sport, he died doing what he
loved to do.. entertain the fans. That's what this business can do
to you, I can understand why Kurt does what he does. It will hurt
you, Kurt. Even if you can't feel it, you'll know it's there after
Nitro. When I lock you in the sharpshooter, you'll feel every single
bit of it.
He points to
himself.
[[ Bret Hart ]]
You're looking at excellence. You can
search the world far, and wide.. the only person who can truly call
himself that, is me. I'll hear you claim that I'm too old, that I'm
years past my prime. It's okay, I expect it. Just think how stupid
you're going to look at Nitro, Kurt.. when that Sharpshooter makes
you scream like you've never done before. It's amazing to think that
once again, I'll walk down to that ring, and hear the roar of my
fans. It's one of the main reasons that I came back, everywhere I
went.. people would ask me to have one last run. They told me
wrestling was getting stale, the new guys weren't cutting it like
the old pro's used to back in the day.
A smile.
[[ Bret Hart ]] When I think of my time in wrestling, I'm happy with
it all. When I used to work the old Stampede shows for Stu, I didn't
want to make a career of this. It just grew on me, it dragged me in,
and didn't let me go. I can't wait for Nitro, I just keep watching
the clock ticking by. I'm going to show that I'm still as good as I
ever was, possibly even better than before. You'll all just have to
wait, and see. Kurt, I want you to know this is nothing personal.
I'm just doing what it is that I do best, and to show everyone out
there that I'm still... the best there is... the best there was and,
the BEST there ever will be.
