A Dominic Pericolo Story, Book One: The Fall of a Hero

"...promised her, Suki. As joking as that incident may have been for us, I promised her!"

Dominic angrily slammed his foot on the accelerator, his eyes set on the road ahead. There was voices on the other line, all the voices of his friends trying to calm their 'hero' down.

"Bullshit! A hero saves the girl, Suki! I'm no fucking hero to anyone, I'm just a God damned failu--Chris, you stay out of this! You know it's true, I'm a FAILURE, Chris. I fucking failed her, I failed everyone!"

"..."

"You know it's true, and that's why she's not here anymore! I--...I know, dad...I know she'd hate to hear me like this, but God damn it..."

It seemed as though every single important person in his life was on the other line of the phone, trying to do their best to calm Dominic down as he drove through the pounding rain. To him, however, it wasn't them showing their care for him...it was him against the world.

And even in Dominic's mind, he knew he was losing.

Just as things were beginning to be too much for Dominic however, another incident was to occur. The car was beginning to slow down and, despite his current conversation, Dominic took notice to it rather quickly. Cursing up a storm, he watched the speedometer continue to drop, until finally his car came to a stop and sputtered in surrender.

"It's nothing, my damn car just broke down is all...no, don't bother calling for a tow truck, I think I see a church up ahead. I'll just stay there for the night, I don't want to burden you guys. Yeah, I know...but still, you guys just stay put and take care, alright? I'll be fine. Love you all too...alright, bye."

Finally, the conversation had ended and one part of Dominic's impending mental breakdown was out of the way. Now for part two...this damn car wouldn't start, so he'd leave it here until morning.

Taking his keys out of the ignition and cramming them in his pocket, Dominic then spent the next few moments attempting to find his umbrella. Finally finding and grabbing it out from under the passenger seat, Dominic opened the door and kicked it outward before pointing the umbrella out and opening it, and then stepping out under it. He slammed the door shut and ran as fast as he could for the church, holding tight to the umbrella all the while.

His pants, or at least the bottoms of them, were fairly soaked by the time he'd managed to reach the steps leading up to the church's entrance. Lightning flash throughout the sky as the oncoming rumble of thunder seemed to shake the church's foundation, bringing a disgruntled sigh from Dominic's lips.

"Hmph, church...haven't been here in a long, long time..."

With his fist raised and ready, Dominic approached the door and brought his hand forward for the inevitable request for entry, and this time...he mustered up the strength just fine, much unlike his childhood years. Three consecutive taps on the door followed, and then...
