act 11: triumph over past adversity
--------------------------------------
No bright flashes of light were there when he walked the pathway, no sudden changing of scenes and no abrupt flooding of senses.
However, there was one thing that came to his attention in a short matter of time... the gradual change of the environment around him. It was subtle yet noticible in some of the simplest ways: the grass growing evermore greener, the trees standing evermore taller, and the skies becomming evermore clearer, even. The breeze remained gentle as ever, carressing Dominic's face and gently pushing him forward down the path, looking to help get him to where his destination lied.
It didn't take long before Dominic saw a figure in the distance and, just as had been with the previous two pathways... he knew it was the man he was going to speak with.
Dominic looked all around at the skies above, a sense of calm resolve building within him. The feeling of happiness he held was flooding his senses rather then a burst of light this time, as he realized that he was finally going in the right direction. Everything was really coming together this time-- unlike when he won the title and felt as though all the peices of the puzzle were fitting together.
He didn't see the troubles to come back then.
He almost missed them going into this match on Sunday.
Thank God he caught them before it was too late.
"No thanks neccesary, my son." came a booming voice from a long distance away, stopping Dominic dead in his tracks as he looked to the shadowed figure at the end of the path, his eyes slowly beginning to widen in realization.
"God...?" came the question from Dominic's lips, confusion and awe intermingling together in his words to form a childlike quality to them, as the shadowed figure began to walk down the path towards him, two more slowly walking behind him.
Dominic picked up his pace a little more, walking quicker towards the three figures before him in hopes of reaching God quickly, not wanting to waste another precious moment of time in learning of his destiny. Yet when he arrived before the Lord Almighty, he noticed something he certainly wasn't expecting: Satan and his counterpart were the figures behind him.
"Greetings, my son." smiled God as he stepped towards Dominic, gently placing his arm over his shoulder. He began to walk back down the path with Dominic, brushing past Lucifer and Dominic's counterpart in the process, the two of them following him in silence.
"I cannot tell you how happy I am to see you here today..." God sighed, looking to Dominic, "Seems like yesterday when I created you and all the rest of mankind's souls, you know... I can remember all the faces of those who stood before me and shouted my name in glory. Ironic, isn't it Dominic? That you yourself are in a profession where so many people shout your name out loud."
"But not nearly as many people as those who shout your own... I'm nothing compaired to you, Lord." Dominic said, looking on at the Creator with awe in his eyes, "There isn't anything that can compa--"
"Sshh, I know, my Son, and I thank you for your praise," God interrupted, parting from Dominic long enough to turn and face him, placing both hands on his shoulders, "Yet now is not the time for such things, I am here to help you just as I promised in the word that I would. After all of what has happened you've continued to come back to me... and I cannot tell you how glad I am for that. Long ago it seemed that when the odds were all against you you would turn away from my name and curse it as though I brought destruction upon you."
"I know, Lord... and I should have known better. I should have known that it wouldn't be you who would cast all those cursing upon me, but Satan--"
"Lies! All lies!" cried Satan, throwing his arms into the air as he glared heatedly at Dominic, "Remember the words of the bible! 'WHY HAST THOU FORSAKEN ME?' cried Jesus unto the Lord, for his own father had left him to die! What makes you so certain the same won't be your fate?!"
Dominic glared right back at Lucifer, a fire in his eyes burning nearly as bright as the Eternal Lake of Fire itself, fueled with a passion to learn of his destiny and an anger towards the damned snake of the garden.
"Because..." he growled, "The Lord so loved man that he allowed Jesus to sacrifice himself for humankind, saving us all. There was no forsaking, Jesus CHOSE his fate just as he spoke to me that I should choose my own, and you are NOT apart of it! Now go! Leave!"
Snarling, raging, a look of damning anger in his eyes... Lucifer stormed away from the path, cursing every other word which was uttered from his mouth. Nonchalantly, Dominic's counterpart watched Lucifer's departure before turning his attention to Dominic, who had finally realized what it is he was to do to see what lies ahead for him on the path.
To see the images he wished to see... he would first have to cast aside the two paths before the Lord God Almighty himself.
"And as for you..." Dominic whispered to his counterpart, a determined look in his eye, "I don't wish to ever live the life you've brought onto yourself. To lose myself, to lose Suki, and to lose sight of God and allow fear from the past to consume my mind? To give up on everything that I love? Everything that I stand for? It won't happen-- I refuse it. Be gone with you as well, because to me you will never have the opportunity again to come to reality."
Silence was the reply which came from the counterpart, who stared at Dominic for several seconds before finally giving him a peaceful smile, slowly fading away... slowly being set free from the life that even he hated to be put through so much.
Finally, God spoke up once again.
"Good work, my Son... it seems you truly are ready."
And, with that... the Lord placed his hand on Dominic's forehead, and all the world around Dominic faded into obscurity.
'What the...' thought Dominic, suddenly finding himself looking at a world completely different to the one he was just within. He then soon realized that he was in some sort of a room-- perhaps a large hotel one, with the sound of footsteps coming his way.
Dominic turned his head, and saw the most beautiful angel he'd ever seen in his entire life.
Walking through the door arm in arm, Dominic Pericolo's new counterpart walked with Suki Minamoto, whose belly was enlargened to hold their coming child within. On the night stand, his counterpart set the NLCW World Heavyweight Title down, before gently kissing Suki on the lips and then on the belly, a contented smile on his face.
"Management really is proud of me, Suki... and I can't tell you how happy I am for all that's happening. I... I finally did it, but I couldn't do it at all without you angel."
Suki looked at the counterpart with nothing but pure love in her eyes as she pulled herself close to him, hugging him tightly and smiling as broadly as she possibly could.
"God, Domi... I love you so damn much."
"I love you too, Suki..."
A flickering of the world around them.
Dominic looked on confused, as the scenery around him began to shift into some sort of a field rather then the inside of a room. Beneath the shade of a rather large tree, several of Dominic's closest friends and family, along with many co-workers from the NLCW, were enjoying a barbeque and watching a game of football being played among the wrestlers.
'Typical American past-time right there.' Dominic thought to himself with a chuckle.
"You damn bastards," came the voice of Chris Champion from the sidelines, "You told me there would be football! What the hell is this? This isn't football!"
"You damn Brit, you knew well what I meant!" shouted Dominic's counterpart to Chris, as a laugh sprung up from many of those in the game and watching from the side, as Chris smirked to himself and made his way over to the grill.
"Screw you then, Domi-boy, I'll just steal one of your hotdogs!"
"You stay the hell away from my food, Chris!"
"Uh oh Dominic! My hand, it's on the bun! It's lifting it to my mouth, I can't stop this damn thing! I... I... mmphhh... mmmmmmphhh... OH NO! I took a bite, Dominic! A BITE!"
Dominic laughed... it was just like Chris to do that to him-- he'd have to make sure to take Chris down before he went for the hotdog whenever whatever this day was might come.
The world flickered again, suddenly being replaced by multiple worlds all around Dominic, the scenes playing out from different times in his future. All of which pleasent... all of which depicting something great caused by his decision to stray from the path of Purgatory.
A life of happiness... all awaiting for him if he stayed true to his world.
"So this is my future..." Dominic whispered softly, standing in the middle of multiple screen-like worlds completely surrounding him, so that no matter where he turned, a new event in his life would play before him.
"... thank you, Lord... thank you so much."
Finally... he had walked down the pathway to heaven, and saved himself from a failure he would have otherwise been doomed to suffer.
