A gentle breeze, the calm chirps of lovebirds in a park, the blue sky hanging overhead... setting a scene of tranquility, capturing the beauty this world can offer. Over time, mankind has grown to appreciate and love the light from the sun... for it brings them the joys that only their planet can offer. Peace, serenity... it's places like these where man can be at peace, and it's places like these, it seems, that the sun tends so often to visit. The dreams of the past have long since been fulfilled, but the memories... those can never fade away. Green trees shift softly in the breeze, soaking in the light from the skies. A couple walk through the park with smiles on their faces, their hands joined together in a small symbol of unity. A group of friends in a field enjoy a game of football, and a group of children on the playground come up with new games to amuse themselves for the day. The world continues spinning, the happiness continues on... everyone, perfectly content with their lives. "Gods, I miss earth..." sighed the sun, his eyes looking mournfully to the planet, "it's so... it's so boring up here. What good is standing atop the mountain if you have no-one to share it with?" Of course, long ago... there would have been another to share it with, but those times were never meant to be. A sole survivor... that was what the gods demanded, and that was what the gods received. In the end, the sun had triumphed... and ever since that bloody day, the earth had prospered in ways unlike any the sun ever saw during his stay on earth. Yet everything he dreamed of doing for the earth... it all had came back to hurt him, in the end. It certainly is lonely at the top of Olympus. "Dom... shit, man... why did we go and do something so stupid? Why'd we fall for that "last man standing" garbage... we could have kept that cycle going forever, you know? Christ... look at me, I'm nothing now. I'm everything and nothing at all. You always... you always wanted to fulfill your dreams like me, but damn... if only you were here today. It's not all that it's cracked up to be, Dom... when those dreams are done and gone, and you're alone... sometimes you wish the dreams never came true." Staring off into the distance, the sun looked at the black void behind him. The earth would never again have to see that void encircle it... he would forever make sure of that, but in the end... he almost wished it was someone else who'd been chosen by the gods to do this. Because of destiny, he had lost everything he'd cared for... all in the name of fulfilling a dream that, once fulfilled, would leave him empty and stuck in eternity, always static in the sky over earth. "Lying bastards," the sun spoke bitterly, looking into the void where a few distant stars shined back at him, "They said being the only one remaining... I'd never grow tired of this job again. Yet they only meant in strength? Mentally, I could damn sure use a break... eternity just isn't anything like what I expected." Indeed, it seemed that the mentality of the sun was beginning to fade away. He was beginning to grow unstable without the moon there to keep him in a cycle. The gods had expected that by the time the two were seperated through death, the surviving party would be capable of taking the burden with ease... but they'd never expected the bond between the two to carry so far, and be so strong. Yet that wasn't the only thing bothering the sun... there was another issue, an issue he had dealt with long before he'd even became the deity he was today. His pride. Long ago, during the times when he would cycle with the moon... he'd always take note at how mankind stared up at the moon in wonder. The moon was something that, to them, they could reach out and touch... perhaps even one day walk on. It was like a smaller earth, yet it brought a light with it that could light the dark of night and help set a path for those lost in the shadows. Mankind simply adored the moon, it seemed... because it was something that was still on their level. Mankind could look up to the moon... yet never to him. Never to the sun. A curse, perhaps, for being the gift of light to the world... but none of mankind could ever look up to the sun. Where the moon would try to keep himself on the level he was when he walked the earth... the sun elevated itself ever-higher, a target in the sky that no man wished to try and touch. This seemed to bother the sun most of all, because for all he gave, he got so little in return. "Heh... figure that, Dominic, you're still pissin' me off from beyond the grave. Little bastard..." A pause. The sun stared down at the earth and let out a final sigh. "I... can't do this, damn it. I can't do this forever. I... shit, I needed you, Dominic, why the hell did we have to... argh." The plan of the gods had fallen into shambles, all because of the way they had handled seperating the bond between sun and moon... between brothers in arms who could never have imagined that they would have had to do what they'd done. A familiar darkness began enveloping the earth, as mankind watched on in horror at the days of old slowly creeping in. Paradise was lost... all because the gods could not settle to see two stand atop the mountain. One or the other, they said, and in turn received none. "Game over, Dom... I can't do this anymore. I won, and because of that... I lost it all." He cast one final look at the once happy planet, knowing well that soon it would be plunged into darkness again... and for all he knew, the cycle might repeat itself over again. "And because of that... so did they." And, with that, the sun faded into the void, leaving the world behind. |
