Aftermath: The End

Flash Back: Anniversary 2001, Eli Flair vs. Troy Windham, post- match.

(Eddy wisely ties up Sweet Melissa with both arms and carefully retreats. Windham lets them go and turns his attention to Flair.)

SB: In all seriousness Buckley Flair isn’t dead.

BB: Sammy are you sure?!

SB: Beyond a doubt, I just heard a loud sigh coming from his direction. Of course that could have been a last gasp of life, but I’m standing on the side of positive thinking.

BB: STOP! Paramedics have returned to the ring, fans if you’re watching at home all you can do at this time is pray. Pray for that young man’s well being. I fully understand the magnitude of evil that transpired in mobile at the hands of Flair towards Melissa herself, but this is over the line. Oh geez come on Eli. Come on son.

SB: (pause) An argument about the dangers of live TV is wrong at this moment, correct?

BB: Marvin...please.

(Cue up CSWA promo)

As the promo started, the paramedics had loaded Eli up onto a stretcher, carrying him out of the arena. Melissa and Eddy were down by the curtain, victorious. The fans were.... silent. Sure, some were cheering for Eli and Troy's bloodfest, some were cheering for Eli finally getting comeuppance for Sweet Melissa, and some were cheering the fact that Eli was officially the match winner.

Most, however.... had enough decorum to realize this was not a cheering situation. The paramedics had braced Eli's neck, braced Eli's knee, and had sponged up a good deal of his blood. But the blood continued to flow.

With insane amounts of care, they maneuvered him on the stretcher through the ropes and out the door. Things looked grim for the King of Extreme.... as he was finally paying for sins past.

The promo for CSWA OnTime continued, as the announcers took a few moments break.

"This is surreal," said Bill Buckley, "Who'd have thunk it, Sammy?"

"Eddy warned him," replied Sammy, "Melissa warned him. Everyone warned him. He's paying for it like I knew he would. Like you knew he would."

"It's one thing to say it," said Buckley, "It's quite another to see it happen, and you know it."

A few fans who had been able to get within arm's reach of Eli patted him on the arm or shoulder to tell him to hang in there. But after fewer than a dozen steps, the paramedics noticed that it was getting hard to hold the stretcher steady.

"Holy--- he's loose!"

Indeed, he was. Eli Flair, finally regaining consciousness, noticed his wrapped- up state, and his assisted removal from the ring.

"What the...." slurred Eli, "Where the f**k am I?"

"CAREFUL--!"

The paramedic's words went unfinished, as Eli rolled off the stretcher and hit the ground hard. Immediately, the towels and sponges fell from his body and the blood began to flow again. The paramedics immediately grab him and try to set him back on the stretcher, but he pushes the one away and falls into the other - his knee unable to support his body.

"Mr. Flair, please!" cried the second paramedic, "You need to let us help you!"

Eli looked back at the man with blood coursing down his face. Trying to express his thoughts with words right now would be useless.... for that matter, words are probably beyond Eli's ability at the moment. The strain in his muscles is apparent as he pulls himself to his feet on the guardrail, keeping the paramedics at bay with his overall look.

"Mr. Flair," said the second paramedic again, "Please.... let us help you."

Eli looks them over again, pulling off the neckbrace and tossing it down. His gaze drifts past the paramedics, however.... toward the figure approaching him from the backstage.

Poison Ivy.

They haven't seen each other since ELVIS LIVES.

Without saying a word, she walks to him and puts his arm around her neck, helping him up.... and at last, the paramedics understand.

"Do your f**kin' job," she warns them, "and stay a step back in case he needs help."

As Ivy helps Eli walk out of the arena to a standing ovation.... an obscure piece of CSWA trivia crosses several people's minds. Eli Flair has always walked out of the arena.

Solely because of a returning friend.... Eli's record remains perfect.

"Thanks, Ivy," said Eli, as soon as they were out of the line of the fans' sight, "Good to have you back."

"Well it's good to see you again," replied Ivy, looking Eli over, "Or, what's left of you, at least."

Ivy grabs a passing stagehand by the sleeve.

"Hey," she began, "Ambulance. Now."

"No," replied Eli, "No hospital."

"What are you," said Ivy, "F**kin' stupid? I said Ambulance. NOW."

The stagehand rushes off to get something arranged.

"When I want a hospital," said Eli, "I'll ask for one."

Ivy stood up, smirking. "Bull. You wouldn't ask to go to one if your leg was hanging off by a sliver of skin. Now, I'm your best friend, so sit back, shaddup, and let me keep you from bleeding to death."

Eli leaned back on the chair, closing his eyes. "I'm not sure what happened out there, Ivy, but something snapped in my mind. Eddy and Melissa did a number on me in there, didn't they?"

Ivy began pacing, looking for the medics. "Well you can't say they weren't justified, can you?"

Eli opened his eyes, rolling his head slightly to look at Ivy. "They were justified.... but they also proved my point.... that the people in this company will do anything at any time to hurt anyone. There's a reason why I spiked Melissa in the middle of a match, just like there's a reason why Melissa chose that moment to exact her revenge - the moment that I was hobbling and losing blood very quickly."

He leaned forward, forcing himself to his feet.

"There's no more boundaries to cross, Ivy," he began, "There's no reason to hold anything back. If I can be condemned for one action, then my victims are able, even encouraged, to pay me back in kind using comparable actions and circumstances.... then there's no reason to fight for either side anymore. Do you get what I'm saying?"

Ivy stopped, her back to Eli.

"I get it," she said, "I just don't agree with it."

"What?"

She turned around again. "There's gotta be a line," she said, "there's gotta be a point where everyone has to say, 'Okay.... stop it. Everything's settled now.' You and Eddy and Melissa and Troy have all spilled gallons of blood, and now it sounds like you're saying that tonight is the beginning instead of the ending? You're gonna kill yourself."

As the medics approach with a blanket and some ice, Eli braces himself against the wall. "What are you saying?"

"Listen, Eli," she said, "You and I are family.... that can't change. You're my best friend.... that won't change. But if you're going to fight this war.... you're gonna have to do it without me in your corner."

Eli starts to reply, but she holds up her hand.

"You and I worked together so well because we had similar goals and ideas. I can't be in your corner right now, because I don't agree with your professional agenda. This business is about working your ass off to be able to call yourself one of the immortals.... well this isn't about a name anymore, this is about a blood- feud. And I don't want any part of it."

The medics wrap Eli up in their blanket and begin to ice down his face and head. "C'mon, Eli," said the first one, "you're gonna need some stitches."

Eli is led away by the medics as Ivy stays behind, watching him go.

If you listen closely, you can almost hear....

....the ending of an era.
