Hello DEFIANCE.

Maximum DEFIANCE is in the books, so I wanted to address everyone about some things that have been going on behind the scenes. Most of this isn’t really top secret stuff. Some of you may have an inkling about some of it, but at the same time it hasn’t been widely disseminated for public consumption either.

In simple terms, Justin has stepped out of his day-to-day operations role in DEFIANCE.

What does this mean?

Justin is the owner of DEFIANCE. That hasn’t changed and never will. It means a lot to him and he will still be around. But, running a fed of any kind is a heavy load that can wear anyone down. I know this from experience.

Due somewhat to that experience, I was nominated to take the reins. So, effective immediately, I’ll be in charge of daily operations.

What does this mean for you, the handlers?

Not much in a practical sense. Most of what you do as a handler will not change in any way. You will still work with your writing partners for each arc to develop the stories you want to tell. You’ll still set your planning documents. You’ll still call your segments in the run sheets. I’m not reinventing the wheel. DEFIANCE runs best when everyone has ownership of their characters and their characters’ portrayals. There are some common sense things in place. I’ll approve final booking decisions, etc. But the freedom you have in DEFIANCE to tell our story is not going away. I prefer not to micro-manage.

What will change I some added tools to hopefully make sure things run smoothly. When feud documents are set and we know who is working with who at the beginning of an arc, I will be assigning each feud or program a “road agent.” I know this is online and we don’t go on the road, but we’re wrestling fans here. This is a term we’re familiar with, so it’s a term we’ll use.

The road agent assigned to you will be there as a resource. THEY ARE NOT THERE TO COME UP WITH YOUR STORYLINE.

If you have a question or a concern, this is where you should go first. If you are unhappy with how that question or concern is handled, you should come to me and I’ll make a call.

If you want guidance or opinions, you road agent will do this for you. If you want guidance or opinion from me, I will also do this for you. Anyone on staff can help, however it is my intention that your road agent be your first point of contact.

Your road agent will also be the one who contacts you first if there’s something that you need to do, but you haven’t done it yet. They will only remind you once. After that, you will hear from me. Again, I am not a micro-manager and I do not expect my staff to be, either. We’re all adults and should be able to handle our business. But, the aforementioned will be the chain of command if you don’t.

A note on that. If you aren’t doing what you are expected to do, I expect communication. Let your assigned road agent know, but copy me on the communication as well. If you are in the midst of an emergency, drop us a line as soon as you are able to do so. Even something as simple as “dealing with an emergency, will update you later” is sufficient.

If you don’t communicate, if you don’t do what you’re supposed to be doing – then your road agent tries to contact you and gets no response, I will try. If I try and get nothing, you will be cut. I’m not raging at you and I’m not chasing you. We will move on. I think this is fair. I’m open to conversation, but this is the standard way I will handle such things.

The following people are official staff besides me:

Lindsay Branca
Andy Murray

In addition to me, these two will fulfill the road agent role. They have other things they will be helping me with, but those things will be handled and assigned internally. Rest assured, there are tasks behind the scenes that must be done for each show to make sure DEFIANCE runs smoothly, and these two have offered to give of their free time to make sure these things are done for everyone.

Other people who are helping regularly:

Evan Hurley –

Evan has been doing a great job with the BRAZEN project. He’ll continue doing this. I’ve also asked him to be the official/unofficial go-to guy for new handlers to help them get acclimated to the way we do things, make them feel welcome and the like. Evan hates labels, but I like organization, so I’m just letting everyone know what’s up.  He’s always pretty much done these things but I wanted to make it official. He’s good at it, and is a huge asset in this regard, so he’ll continue to do this. There are also other things he’ll offer to do from time to time.

Pete Russo –

Pete has been proofreading our shows and will continue to do this. Again, Pete commit a tremendous amount of time to this task on top of the time he takes to write his own characters. Pete can also help with forum administration tasks since he is, like me and Lindsay, an FWC forum administrator.

Last, and most importantly, I have an open door, open ear policy. If you have any questions or have anything to say, feel free at any time to ask. Even if it's an uncomfortable conversation, let's have it. I prefer honesty and direct conversation.

This is a lot of information to digest so I’ll leave it at that for now. Keep writing and putting together your stories. That’s what makes DEFIANCE the amazing place to write that it is.

Thanks.
