“So, what, we didn’t get in?”

Fade in on a scene that will, inevitably, become a staple of the ULTRATITLE this year; that being the basement of Mrs. Dewey’s Buffalo, Wyoming home. The same basement that had been occupied by her sons, Eugene and Wayne since they had left school. It’s as one may expect, a couch, a couple of desks, a TV that would give any stadia’s jumbotron a run for it’s money, shelf after shelf of DVDs, games and other miscellaneous boxes that at one time or another might have contained a brand new, shiny graphics card... yeah, this was a regular haven for any geek.

What’s that? Where are the mandatory toys, action figures, comics and movie memorabilia? The brothers do have bedrooms, you know? Only they have an agreement that they are never to go into the others without an escort. Who knows what one might find in there.

Down the wooden stairs walked two guys that looked like they’d received more than their fair share of wedgies over the years. It was obvious they were brothers though, after all, they had the matching bright orange hair, freckles, glasses and zits one might expect such sibling to have, but that’s where the similarities ended. Wayne, the much shorter and thinner of the two jumped the last few steps as he always did and turned around to his taller, fatter, more afro-ed brother and shook his head.

“No, man, you got in, your bracket just hasn’t been announced yet.” He said nonchalantly, “Which is a good thing I guess. It means we don’t have to plan our strategy for the tournament for a couple more days.”

Eugene didn’t say anything as he plodded down the remaining steps, turned and headed towards the stained, brown couch that the brothers had been working on softening for the last ten years.

“But that doesn’t change the fact that there’s a load of guys in this tournament, dude.” Continued Wayne as he tagged along with his brother and hopped over the armrest to take his place on the couch. “We’re still gonna have to be well prepared for round one though, you could be against anybody.”

“Like who?” Asked Eugene as he scooped up his Xbox 360 controller and held down the big green X button. “Anyone I know?”

Wayne snorted a little at that question. Obviously to understand the inanity of it you should probably know that prior to entering Defiance, Eugene had seen approximately zero wrestling events. The only names he’d probably recognise would be fellow Defiants, and even then he might not be incredibly au fait with them.

“Well, there’s Jeff Andrews, Cancer Jiles, ‘Suite’ Pete Whealdon and Dan Ryan, They’re all entered.” Replied Wayne, “But beyond that I doubt you’ve ever heard of anyone. But there’s a plethora of talent out there, trust me.”

“Didn’t you say Andrews, Whealdon and Ryan had already been drawn?” Questioned Eugene as he pointed the TV remote at the... well... TV.

“Yeah,” Replied Wayne, taken aback a little by the fact that Eugene had actually paid attention to his earlier reciting of brackets one and two. “So you’re not going to have to deal with any of them until way late in the competition.”

“You think I can get that far?” Eugene asked as he flicked through the menus on his screen, looking for any new demos that he could download.

“Of course, man, I’m sure you’re gonna go all the way.” Replied Wayne supportively, before adding under his breath, “There’s a first time for everything.”

“What?” Eugene asked having not properly heard the comment from his supposed best friend, but he still shot Wayne a threatening glare.

“I said, ‘Now’s time for gaming’.” Said Wayne, slightly relieved he was able to think of that so quickly. Sure he worked as Eugene’s manager, but he was first and foremost his brother. Isn’t it a duty to give your siblings a hard time? He continued trying to make Eugene overlook the verbal putdown, “Look, we won’t know how easy you’re going to have it until Thursday now, so just sit back, play some games and we’ll worry about whoever we’re facing in round one then.”

Eugene didn’t take his eyes off of his brother, or that nervous grin that he wore until his download beeped to say it had finished. Then he turned and leaned back into the comfort of the couch cushions, where he would remain for the rest of the evening, night and early hours of the morning.
