“Mute Freak”

The voices echoed through his head as he laid on the specially made mattress. He rolled onto his side, looked at the monitor beside his bed, and watched a light on it beep with some body function. In the weeks that had followed the On Time taping, after his last words were spoken, the man called Deacon had spent plenty of time in places like this, undergoing a myriad of tests with the expected results.

“A Mute Freak”

The tests had been conclusive - Deacon’s body was rejecting his medication and degenerating. In a phrase, he was dying from MS. This reality had been there, but in the weeks after his comeback to the CSWA, the Deacon persona had once again eclipsed the man referred to in life as Elijah. And once again, the reality of being a man had eclipsed the future of the Deacon. He wouldn’t go on. He wouldn’t “comeback”. He would never stand atop the CSWA again, he would be lucky to keep standing.

“That Mute Freak”

Today, he couldn’t speak. When he entered the CSWA, this was his first nickname, lovingly bestowed upon him by his chief rival (and backstage friend), Eddy Love. At the time, a speaking Deacon was unthinkable. He was the silent giant that backed up the words spoken by Chris Shepherd. But then, he could talk - just not speak English well enough to earn mic time. Now, he could not speak at all. Then, it was a backstage rib, Eddy teasing him in the locker room before the night’s card, and that rib had filtered its way onto the tv screen. Now, it was reality.

“The Mute Freak”
He looked at the telephone, it sat on the nightstand mocking him better than even Kevin Powers could. It had been weeks since he had talked with Eli or Chris or anyone. He had received cards from several from the front office, even one from the new champ - Dan Ryan - that had a nice note on it. But they hadn’t called... they knew, they couldn’t call. He was a mute freak... a 7 foot freak of nature who couldn’t even ask for a drink of water. He could hit that ridiculous button beside his bed, the nurse could come, and he could point like some toddler. And even then, that toddler could say more than him. He had fought to learn this language, fought for the right to speak for his own character as a way for Deacon to grow, and now... he was what life had made him- -
