Regional Finals Set; Rhine Named Top CoC Contender
WEST CHESTER, PA -- The Regional Finals for the 2008 TEAM Invitational Tournament are set after rousing action in the Sweet Sixteen. The final eight competitors will do battle to decide who shall make it to the tournament semifinals at SuperShow VIII, which will be headlined by Nova defending his Championship of Champions against SCCW Universal Champion Jonathan Rhine.
In the match of the night, Mike Randalls, Orlando's top seed in search of his first major tournament or World Championship in ten years, scored a thrilling victory over PRIME Intense Champion Dusk. Randalls, in trouble near the end of the match, worked Dusk's left leg early, making him unable to use it as his plant leg for his Lights Out superkick. Randalls took advantage with his Santa Fe Cloverleaf, which caused Dusk to tap out to save his own leg.
Only one other number one seed made it out alive, and it was Los Angeles' "Triple X" Sean Stevens, who scored a relatively easy win over the lowest seed remaining, the twelfth seeded MDK. However, in two huge upsets, London's one seed Lindsay Troy, the current PTC Unified Champion, and Minneapolis' one, the defending Merritt Trophy Champion and current holder of no fewer than four World Championships Dan Ryan, fell in their matches. Troy bowed out against fourth-seeded Jonathan Marx at the O2 Arena after a piledriver, and Ryan lost to fourth-seeded Troy Douglas after an incident with the infamous American Idol Flying Squirrel (don't ask).
In other results, second-seeded Chip Friendly upended Bryan Storms in the Orlando region. Second-seeded Ravager scored a flash pinfall against third-seeded Larry Tact in London after reversing Tact's inside cradle into one of his own. Minneapolis' sixth seed Fusenshoff continued his TiT success, defeating the former NAPW Champion and second-seeded Donovan Astros, and in Los Angeles, the seventh-seeded Olvir Arsvinnar caved in Kyle Roberts' chest and moved onto a date with Sean Stevens.
The winners of each of these Regional Finals will face off at SuperShow VIII: Final Four '08 at the Phillips Arena in Atlanta, GA. The winner of the London region will battle the Los Angeles Champion, and the winners of Minneapolis and Orlando will square off. The main event will see Nova defend his Championship of Champions against Jonathan Rhine of Sin City Championship Wrestling. Rhine is a multiple-time Universal Champion, and holds victories over Clinton Sage among others. The FREE FOR ALL~! and Lethal Lottery Championships will definitely be defended at the eighth supercard as well. As for the Challenge Championship, that is pending Ravager's performance against Marx in the London finals.
