RA Palazzo Responds to Canyeta Challenge!

RA Palazzo Responds to Canyeta Challenge
by Stan Jorgensen
Headlock.com

NLW President RA Palazzo responded Sunday to a challenge issued at last week's Golden Boy Grand Prix by semi-retired pro-wrestler Carlos Canyeta.

In a taped commercial segment, Canyeta and ally Arcangel IV put out an open challenge to the NLW roster to fight Canyeta in a street fight outside the Manhattan Centre. The fight, presumably, would take place at the next two TV tapings for the bi-weekly Friday Night Vulgar.

When asked for his take on the challenge, Palazzo did not mince words.

"It's a [bleep] joke. He's out there trying to paint me as a racist, my company as racist, meanwhile he's the biggest con-man going," said the NLW President. "Did you know we actually offered him an eight month contract and an opportunity to compete in the tournament? So he rejects our offer out of hand, and that makes me a racist? [bleep] him."

Last week's challenge was not the first time Canyeta has interfered with NLW programming. At both the first and second televised shows, the former lucha libre champion entered the ring uninvited along with Arcangel IV, and lobbed accusations of racial favoritism at not only NLW, but other wrestling companies such as NFW and UWA, the league where Canyeta made his name as World Champion.

"We're not some hip indy circuit organization who's trying to push backyard wrestlers to the big leagues. We draw major interest all over the east coast, looking to do shows along the Potomac down the line, and just signed a major television deal with ESEN. You think we need this [bleep] right now?" Palazzo continued, "ESEN execs have already contacted me; they think we're in on it, and want the racial stuff toned down. His stunts are not only hurting us, but also his chances at working anywhere else. You think people want that baggage?"

During the late 90's, Canyeta was consistently ranked among PWI's top five wrestlers. After UWA folded in 1999, he went back to Mexico where injuries and rumored locker room incidents plagued a career that was ended abruptly in 2005. Canyeta has since claimed political blackballing and racism as the reason for his shortened career.

"He wants legend status, plain and simple. He wants me to kiss his ass and offer him a contract way above what I'm paying more relevant competitors. So like anything else, it's about the money," Palazzo said. "Look, if Eli Flair came to me tomorrow and said he wanted to wrestle, I'd put my house and future child up as collateral. That's a legend. I'm supposed to get down on my knees and beg for Canyeta, why? Because he was champion of some organization that's been dead for over a [bleep] decade? Get real. Compare this guy to his contemporaries. Guys who held the same titles as him went on to have truly legendary careers, but he pissed it all away and somehow that's my fault?"

Palazzo said he will address the situation with some finality at next week's Friday Night Vulgar in a special edition live show, to be aired after the regular program. Canyeta could not be reached for comment.
