Live report from the Yanitelli Center

JERSEY CITY, NJ - After the disappointments of the Providence show, Just Wrestling booker Tim Shipley might have been understandably apprehensive at returning to Jersey City tonight. On the last tour, Just Wrestling's night at the Yanitelli Center was marred by the no-show of the man then considered the young promotion's superstar, The Illustrious Face-Eater. To appease angry ticket-holders Shipley promised discounts on his return; as such, few seats were empty as Jesse Jamester strode out for the opening match.

A three-way match pitted Jamester against Ivor Avalon and Dr. Giggles; for the circuit veteran this looked like a walk in the park. But Avalon holds an impressive win over Andy Murray and tonight he was tenacious. Giggles had the crowd hooked with his strange antics and perhaps Jamester paid too much heed to a man who has never won a match. The English high-spotter (no relation to the renowned Coral Avalon) set cameras flashing when he took Jesse Jamester by surprise with a devastating snap brainbuster and the veteran paid the price for not giving Ivor Avalon his full attention. The Whitby man has sandwiched two big victories around a limp defeat to Aaron Nothings.

Neither the aforementioned Murray nor the well-endorsed Buck Fledger had won a match on the tour before coming to blows in the ring in the second match of the evening. They looked sluggish initially - ten minutes passed by without any real fluency to the action. But a rapid roll-up from Fledger that almost won him the match jolted both into really showing up, and things were fast and furious until Fledger's inexperience was manifested in naivety when he left himself open for the Hex Breaker and an inevitable three-count.

Cary Turkington is "a shadow of his GCW self" according to a know-it-all fan with backstage passes tonight. This view would be tested when he came up against the man with much responsibility on his shoulders tonight, especially following midweek rumours that Shipley is unhappy with his recent poor showings. The Illustrious Face-Eater was in the building - a welcome change from last time Just Wrestling came to the Yanitelli Center - and looking to divert a four-match losing streak spanning this tour and the last. Admittedly, it was hardly the sparkling performance Shipley may have been looking for, but the showman gave Turkington short shrift in the ring, and his Fish Hooks were as sharp as ever.

Two men of whom the crowd knew little were in the ring next. Both Johnny Vivacious and Maynard Crane had picked up the victory in their only matches prior to tonight. Vivacious, who beat Buck Fledger last time out, looked overly confident in the ring, and this proved catastrophic as Crane tore ferociously into him. It was less a brawl than a massacre, and although the self-styled "Mr. Skullet" fetched little fan response, his six-minute battering of Vivacious was certainly efficient.

That left only Chris Vallette and Aaron Nothings to fill a gaping half hour at the back end of Just Wrestling's booking. Sensing further crowd unrest, Tim Shipley stepped out to the ring to give a short introduction to the match. He explained the "three wins for a title shot" rule that most of the fans know very well, and it soon became evident that the booker was playing for time. Shipley sensibly retreated before the booing rang out and left his charges to it. Nothings, who would take the first shot at new Champion Brock Shepherd if he could defeat Vallette tonight, looked up for the occasion. So, however, did Vallette, primarily the story of the last tour, overlooked as a real threat this time around through his absence from the first two shows. Main-eventing tonight, the rookie who saw great success through September was straight back into his stride. He engineered the match towards something between a brawl and an even rawer street fight, Nothings taking the few chances he got to exploit his technical superiority with armdrags and scoop slams. Vallette seemed to have a clear upper hand, but could not finish his opponent early, and although Aaron Nothings has seen a lot of ring action lately he seemed to raise his game as the match went on, growing into his role as possible title contender. His all-round game allowed him to match Vallette blow-for-blow when he had to, while his athletic disposition meant he almost took the win with a senton bomb after fourteen minutes. But it wasn't to be for the man who has just turned 34 - something that comes as a surprise to many fans; Nothings' lack of real charisma has long prevented his breaking out as a bankable star. The plucky Vallette got his fourth win with his patented Frequency Cut; Nothings kicked out only moments too late. The effort was there, but the exciting talent of Chris Vallette offered that little bit more.

The next show comes from the cavernous Toyota Arena in York, PA. Just Wrestling has never booked a venue anything like this size so please come along and see the freshest product in the North-East. Tickets start at only $10 for a great schedule that includes Vallette, Crane and Turk all looking to nail that elusive third win to secure a shot at Brock Shepherd on the final show of the tour. Shepherd himself will be in action, and the main event sees Fathom and Myles Jake squaring off. Just Wrestling's first foray into Pennsylvania promises to be a great success.
