Has he lost his mind?

[FADE IN. Karl is training in a gym as several others look on. A ring is set up in the centre of the room, and inside are four men. The camera zooms in closer, and we recognise Shinji. The other three are Europeans, each looking about 250lbs, and dressed to wrestle]

Shinji: See how he trains? That is how he should have pushed himself before, and that is how you should all train. Train as if your very life depended on it.

Man#1: I can’t believe he’s still going. It’s been what, ten hours since he started? He hasn’t stopped all day.

Man#2: I can’t believe he lost at Black Dawn. I thought he was going to cruise through Benjamin this time.

Shinji: He thought so too. His mistake was overestimating his opponent. He was doomed from the start.

Man#3: What do you mean?

Shinji: He thought he had improved more than he really had. His skills are good, but nowhere near as good as he thought. Even now, he’s still not as good as he thought he was. He needs to train harder. He realises that now.

Man#1: At any rate, I don’t think this is good for him. He’s training too much, he’s gonna burn out before he even gets to Aggression. And on top of that, he has to face Dakota Smith in the NWL. Stolz on Aggression, Smith on Combat…man, I don’t know if he can handle that.

Man#2: He thinks he can handle Smith. He’s seen him in action, so his NWL match isn’t too big a worry. I’ve been trying to pull up some tapes of this Derek Stolz guy, but haven’t been able to. If we don’t get some soon, Karl’s gonna be going into this match blind.

Shinji: Let him.

Man#3: Huh? LET him go in blind?

Shinji: Wrestlers today are too reliant on what they see an opponent do in other matches. All they need to know is what the opponent does in THIS match. Derrick Stolz has a background as a fighter, so Karl needs to know that. What happened in the past, though, is not worth bringing up now. Maybe small amount of information would be good, but Karl should find that for himself.

Man#2: I guess….

[The camera moves past these four, zooming in to Karl. He’s moved to chin up’s, performing them with heavy breath, but keeps going none the less]

Karl: Derek Stolz. He’s NOT going to beat me. He’s not at the level to beat me.

No, he IS at the level to beat me. That’s the problem.

He IS better than Benjamin. Better than Sands. Better than Magellan. Better than anyone I’ve faced.

If I don’t keep my focus… he’s going to destroy me… I’ve got to keep going to make sure… I survive… must…try harder…

[Shinji comes into shot, talking to Karl as he trains]

Shinji: Karl, you try too hard now. Before you not train enough. Now, you train too much. Your body cannot cope. Rest a while, and resume training in the morning.

Karl: With all respect, Shinji, no. If I don’t train, I’ll NEVER make it to the next level.

Shinji: Karl, you try too hard, move too quickly. Remember that even the slowest trickle of a river can destroy the mightiest mountain. It only takes time. You will advance, you will improve. Set yourself smaller goals.

Karl: I already did. My goal was to win the IC title to see how far I’d progressed. I failed. No way I’m going to stay that way for long. This Stolz guy has a lot to deal with when I get in the ring with him at Aggression.

[Shinji sighs, before moving behind Karl, hooking his waist and performed a perfect German Suplex, floating over to pin Karl in a headlock. The camera moves round to show their faces]

Shinji: You will stop. You cannot push yourself so hard. This is every day since Black Dawn that you’ve trained more than ten hours without rest. I will not let you put in another fifteen hour day. Not today.

[Karl, furious, shifts his weight, breaking free of Shinji’s grip. He floats over, hooking Shinji in a dragon sleeper on the ground, pulling his face closer to his former trainers]

Karl: I’ll keep going until I progress to the next level. However long that takes. Smith, Stolz, I don’t care. I’ll beat them both in one night if I have to. I’m going to surpass anyone’s expectations. And if I have to start training twenty-four hours every day to do it, I will gladly.

[Karl releases Shinji, then starts doing his chin ups again. Shinji, still startled by this change in personality, dusts himself down, stands, and steps disheartened out of shot. The camera zooms in on Karl’s face, dripping with sweat]

Karl: I will surpass. I have to. Stolz is far superior to me, so I have to become superior to myself. I need my strength, my speed, my endurance… everything needs to increase beyond it’s limits. Nothing’s going to stop me on my quest. I’ll break out the Dragon’s Fire if I have to to win this one. I will do whatever it takes. Stolz, you had better be ready for a fight, because I am in no mood to *****foot around. Take me lightly and it will be your career on the line. You won’t beat me as easily as Benjamin did. I promise you that. You won’t stand in my way.

[The camera pulls back round, panning round to see the ring. The three remaining people in it are standing in amazement at what happened to Shinji. As we fade, the camera catches a man in a red tracksuit standing on the outside on the far side of the ring. FADE OUT]
