eWrestling Experience: I started efedding in 2007, and have been in mostly a roleplay-based atmosphere in a few feds here and there. I haven’t roleplayed in a while, but I love coming up with ideas for characters/storylines/angles and so I thought I’d try my hand at an angle fed. I love working with people, mostly; OOC communities have been the driving force of my staying involved with the game.
How did you find DEFIANCE? I heard about the fed some time ago, but it was more recently with chat about angle feds on the EFG Podcast that I began to really look into it.
Writing Sample
(Sample 1: A past roleplay, to give you an idea of my style of writing and storytelling with this character. A little bit of context: in this fed, I worked with the handler of Shawn Preston in building a Preston/Freeman feud leading to a mixed tag match at a major PPV, where the Light-Heavyweight Title would be on the line as well as Kenny’s dignity. This RP was for a singles match between the two at the PPV before for the title. All this to say, I’m familiar with working with others on feuds/angles even in a roleplay-based environment.)
The scene opens outside the Good Burger, where a celebration is underway for Kenny Freeman's victory over Lee Archer, as well as his shot for redemption at Highlight Night against Shawn Preston. In honor of such a great wrestler finally shining in the TFWF, the establishment is packed to the brim with wrestling fans mixed in with the usual Good Burger patrons. Despite the feel good atmosphere, our hero sits at a table with a look of disappointment on his face as his mother and Steve the Turtle arrive with trays of food to share. Kenny's mom notices the look, responding with a bit of a frown herself.
"What's wrong, dear?"
"Yeah, Kenny. You won! You should be thrilled!"
Kenny nods slowly in agreement, picking up one of the burgers. He takes a small bite, trying hard to enjoy it before speaking.
"I know, it's just..."
Kenny's mom rests a hand on his shoulder, patting it gently.
"It's about the girl again, isn't it?"
Kenny simply nods again, taking another bite from his burger.
"The look on her face..."
“Means absolutely nothing, Kenny. We already talked about this, didn’t we? Any girl who can be that easily manipulated cannot possibly look out for your best interests.”
“Yeah, but it's not JUST about her anymore, Mom. If Shawn’s influence on her is starting to fade, maybe...just maybe...his weird sense of philosophy isn't all it’s cracked up to be. And finding those cracks in the armor of Shawn Preston is gonna be crucial to finally shutting him up at Highlight Night.”
Steven smiles, applauding Kenny's thought process. Kenny's mom soon joins in, a big smile on her face.
"My my, Kenny Freeman. It sounds as though you have a game plan going into this match."
Kenny stands up, a smile on his face and burger in hand.
"Heck yeah I have a game plan! This is my chance at redemption! I've let that jerk push me around for far too long, and come Highlight Night I'm gonna let him have it! You've seen what he's put me through over the last couple of months. It was only a matter of time before I gave him the same embarrassment he's given me, and with thousands watching from the MTS Center and millions watching at home, I'm going to finally put an end to the hate coming from him AND my detractors when I win the Light Heavyweight Championship!"
By now, a small crowd has formed around Kenny and his immediate company, and the people gathered are quite enjoying the speech.
“My match at Highlight Night is about proving Shawn Preston wrong. In the last couple of months, he's tried everything to take away my dignity, my pride, my honor. At Highlight Night, I will show him that it was all for nothing. My pride can't be broken by petty attacks, verbal and physical. It can't falter, even when it seems like everyone I know abandons me. Because I know, and you know, that's complete nonsense."
Kenny points to the people around him, including his mother and Steven.
"I have my friends, my family, and my Freebirds standing by my side. Preston preaches a philosophy of Why Not, and my response to that is...because I know better. I know better than to follow the advice of one of the sleaziest men on earth. I know better than to accept his bullying as fact...and I know better than to let him get under my skin. I'm going to beat Shawn Preston, win the Light Heavyweight Championship, and HOPEFULLY get a little more respect out of the TFWF. If my dad were only here now, to see that his son was every bit as good as he was, I'd like to think he'd shake my hand, pat me on the back, and say 'good job Kenny, you're a man now.' I might not get that moment, but I can take satisfaction in knowing that people can respect me."
This gets a huge applause from the crowd as Kenny finally sits back down, finishing the last of his burger. His mother hugs him tight, kissing him on the forehead.
"Oh Kenny, I'm so proud of you."
"Thanks, Mom."
The rest of the night goes as well as one would expect, and we now find Kenny helping to clean up the place because naturally, he'd get the closing shift on a night like this. He picks up the last bit of trash, smiling with confidence as he shuts the lights off. He walks away from the restaurant, an extra spring in his step as the scene fades to black.
(Sample 2: A segment I’ve just written, to give you an idea what I’m capable of in this environment.)
[An empty ring inside a warehouse, where we find a stern looking Kenny Freeman with a microphone in hand.]
Kenny Freeman:
This is where it all began. Three years ago, this shoddy looking warehouse is where I first began to ply my trade as a professional wrestler. Every weekend I’d come here, learning the ropes--figuratively and literally--from veterans of the game, trying to soak in as much knowledge as I can so I could become the best wrestler I could possibly be.
[Cut to archived footage from Kenny’s career, with Kenny providing a voiceover commentary of sorts.]
Kenny Freeman:
I spent my entire career fighting the odds, listening to people mock me for my size and my interests. Apparently, being a social media junkie is frowned upon by the boys in the back generally speaking. So, I had to prove myself every step of the way.
[Cut to footage of Kenny winning his first major championship.]
Kenny Freeman:
And that’s what I did. After years of being told I wasn’t good enough, I finally proved that I could hang with the best of them. And you know what happened?
[Cut to black, Kenny still speaking.]
Kenny Freeman:
The promotion I won that title in was shut down. There I was, a champion without a company in which I could be the poster boy.
[Cut back to Kenny in the ring.]
Kenny Freeman:
So, I went back into training in the hopes of one day finding a place in which I could ply my trade again. A place I could call home.
[Kenny finally cracks a smile, showing some of that loveable personality he’s been known for.]
Kenny Freeman:
I’ve spent my whole life defying the odds, defying the haters, and defying anyone that said I wasn't good enough. So, what better place to make a return than DEFIANCE?
[Kenny gives a wink, leaving the ring. Fade to black.]
Wrestler Information
Ring Name: Kenny Freeman
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 190 lbs.
Hailing From: Los Angeles, CA
Alignment: Face
Gimmick: Essentially, the loveable loser or underdog depending on his situation. He’s a young man, fresh out of wrestling school, still trying to prove his worth in the business he loves, and he really really enjoys using social media. That last bit is a little random, I know, but blame that on the fact he’s a millennial.
Wrestling Style: All told, a combination of high flying and technical prowess picked up from his training. Loves trying to impress the crowd, whether it’s flashy spots or solid chain wrestling.
Three Weaknesses: Probably tries TOO hard to impress the crowd, and can be caught off guard as a result; his relative inexperience gets the better of him when wrestling a much more experienced opponent; a little too nice of a man even inside the ring, occasionally lacking “ruthless aggression” that would otherwise help him in the long run.
Three Strengths: His knowledge of technical maneuvers is underrated for his experience; his bright-eyed, naive demeanor works as a surprising distraction to opponents who underestimate him; his kindness makes him a valuable ally, especially in tag matches.
