Rewrite the Script

"We've wrestled for World Titles and personal vendetta, Hornet."

FADEIN: Eli Flair, sitting outside the CS Enterprises main headquarters. He's not wearing the black leather trenchcoat.

"We've wrestled for right and wrong, for Staking a Claim, and for family matters. We've headlined Anniversary and danced in the midcard."

"So what's the story here? What's the script call for? Are we the Greatest American Hero and the Hexed Antihero? Are we partners on a common mission? Are we even on opposite sides of the fence anymore?"

"Because quite frankly, Hornet... I'm tired."

"I don't have the desire to get into another war with you. I don't have the strength to sacrifice what I'll definitely have to sacrifice in order to win another war against you. It's a simple matter of pragmatism, Hornet. Can I win another war against you? Without a doubt. Can you win another war against me? Definitely. But by the time the war would be over, would there be anything left of either of us worth winning over?"

"My priorities are a little different these days."

"So bring your 'A' game, Hornet. Bring every piece of your legendary moveset you can still pull off. I want a match I can remember for a long time to come, Hornet."

"But leave the Claimstaker at home. Because, for the first time, out of every match we've ever had against each other..."

"... it's Nothing Personal."

(Hornet's sitting on the edge of a weight bench, towel around his neck. It's not the most creative place for an interview, but it's where he is.)

You know better, Eli. It's always personal between us.

From the time Ivy stepped out of your corner to mine and back again, to when you found out about Teri and stepped out of the ClaimStakers.

I don't know where you stand, Eli. You left the sport and I applauded you, because you made the decision to be with your family. Now you're back, apparently to jump on Mark Windham. I certainly can't fault you for that one, whatever the reason.

But you're right, Eli, we're both a little past the time for a war. I'm not Troy Windham or Vic Creid; I have no desire to pull out all the stops just to end up another Pyrrhus, just to end up with less than I already have.

I'll bring what I can, Eli. Who knows, maybe you'll help me find that stride again, just in time to get ready to rip Tom Adler from limb from limb.

I'll be honest, Eli... I don't care about your priorities. I would say that I stopped worrying about them the day after you left me on my ass in the middle of the ring... the day when you wouldn't return my calls so we could talk things out.

But that wouldn't be true. I could understand the anger then, Eli. I could understand not wanting to talk to me, to hear my side of the story. You had Ivy to deal with, to help through it all.

But there was another day. I got a call that Ivy was dead. Hours later, I found out she was alive the same way. And I could understand that you didn't call back, that you couldn't return any of the messages I left for you right away. You had lost friends dear to you, and almost lost Ivy.

But to never get a call? Miles, Deacon, even Mark... but you couldn't even have someone leave me a voice mail?

I guess your priorities <i>are</i> different, Eli. I don't believe you'd have treated Hot Scott and his Eliminator any worse. And despite our differences, despite <i>my</i> mistakes, I didn't think you'd ever treat me worse than the scum of the earth.

See you soon, Eli.

"Don't get all 'Poor me' on me when it comes to Ivy, Hornet. You're telling me I treated you the way I would've treated Hot Scott and his Mannequin Party when you got the news about Ivy? What would you have done, Hornet? The same thing everyone else did, and worry until the news filtered through the grapevine."

Eli, too, was sitting on a weight bench somewhere. Because of who he is, we can assume it's Coop's.

"Seventy six messages in the course of ten hours, Hornet. Think about those numbers for a second. Think about the number of people I was trying to weed through that night for just a moment. Do I know, without a doubt, who Ivy was closest to? Who deserved the first callback?"

"Well, yeah. That was Trip. Despite what had gone down between them, I knew Ivy would've wanted to tell him, first. And if we're going to judge the sequence to follow, it was simple. I made a judgement call on who I could tell that'd get the word out the fastest. In hindsight, I should've called you instead of the Loon but at the time - think about it."

"My mentor was dead. Two of my best friends were dead and my conscience was in ICU. My wife and baby were in the room at the time. Damn you for telling me I should've thought of you. Think about the situation for a moment, Hornet... and be honest."

"We're all lucky I remembered how to use a cell phone, let alone who to call."

"This has nothing to do with Ivy, Hornet. This has to do with two men who will be remembered for all time in the CSWA, who have never had that low-stress, low-intensity match that can truly determine who the better man is. Back in '99, you were overconfident and I had nothing to lose, simple as that. Every clash since, it's never been about a winner and a loser, has it?"

"Maybe one of us can take a victory and translate it into another run at the World Title. I've still never gotten a fair shake at it since losing it to Deacon in '99, and you made the decision - the right one in my opinion - to deal with your addiction to painkillers instead of facing Windham last year."

"If your back is feelin' as good as my knees, either one of us could become World Champion tomorrow if we're simply given the shot."

"It's just a matter of who takes it."

"See you soon, Hornet."

"Don't get all 'poor me' on you?" Sounds like advice I gave someone in the ClaimStakers a few years ago, doesn't it?

This isn't about feeling sorry for myself, Eli. It's about letting you know something that I didn't tell you, or anyone, earlier. You gave the tagline, and I'm just saying that yeah, in some ways, it is personal.

And whether or not you want to believe it is, we both know there are some unresolved issues. Whether or not the ring is the place to address those, I guess we'll find out.

For my part, this match is about gearing up for Dan Ryan and the CSWA World Title at PRIMETIME, and then Tom Adler at ANNIVERSARY. And there's no one better than you to put me through the paces.
