The last straw

Moments after Aggression has gone off the air, a camera catches Beast storming through the backstage area, where he walks down a hallway and rounds a corner, before kicking in the door to his dressing room. He walks in, takes his EPW World Heavyweight Championship from over his shoulder, and puts it on a chair, before pacing up and down his dressing room like a caged animal, tense and angry.

Beast: SONOFAB*TCH! Dammit!

DAN RYAN, YOU'RE A F*CKING CO*KSUCKER!!

"DO WHAT IT TAKES!!! DO WHAT IT TAKES!!!"

So help me God, if I hear that one more time, I'm going to take it and shove it up your ass, Ryan!

You may own this company, you bastard, but you sure as HELL don't own ME!

Beast slows his pacing, until he's standing in the middle of the room. He's breathing hard, sweat from the match still dripping off of him. His voice goes lower, more intense.

Beast: You don't own me, Dan. You can't change me. You can't mold me.

YOU CAN'T BREAK ME!!

And if you continue to try, Dan...

You're going to end up like the rest.

Beaten.

Do yourself a favor this week, Dan.

When Dis and I face off for the EPW title at Russian Roulette, stay the hell away from the ring.

Stay the hell away from me.

Or you're going to end up on your ass just like Dis will.

Beast reaches out towards the camera, the view going black as his hand blocks out the light from the lens, and all we hear is a THUD followed by the screen turning into static.

Stoicism

An auditorium, dimly lit. At center stage stands a wooden podium, a wireless microphone resting idly in a holster.

Cue: Spotlight.

White light shines down upon the lecturn, and black text appears along the bottom of the televised projected image.

"Speak when you are angry - and you'll make the best speech you'll ever regret."

The quotation fades away, only to be replaced by bold navy text: the words of Dis.

When Doctor Laurence Peter stated this quote it was not his intention for it to apply soley to the specific circumstance in which you currently find yourself, Beast.

Yet, circumstances being what they are, its directive was hard to ignore.

From what I can tell, you are a man of great pride. You take pride in your accomplishments, you take pride in your laurels, you take pride in being self-centered so far as to call yourself the Alpha Male.

You did not need a belt to help you earn that reputation. Although, the Empire Pro Championship belt makes a nice accessory for your cause.

But pride, like many other things, is a tragic flaw.

Dan Ryan has been all too willing to expose this side of you.

But perhaps, you know all this already. You know Dan Ryan enjoys pushing buttons and crawling under your skin. You know that he takes pleasure in your discomfort. You know he's making it a point to get you out of your element.

You know all this...and you continue to play right into his hand.

Anger cannot be dishonest. But conceal a flaw, and the world will imagine the worst.

You show that Dan Ryan is getting to you, and you show that even a Beast can be broken when the right amount of pressure is applied.

You're looking to me as your recourse, to prove to Ryan and to the rest of the world that your goat can't be gotten. That you're not doubting your ability to stay focused when in the back of your mind you need to not only pay attention to me but also to the man who signs your paychecks and who will inevitably show up at ringside sooner or later.

Please don't fool yourself into thinking that your aim won't be split between two men who both want to see you fail.

And I do want to see you fail, Beast. It would be completely naive of either of us to think otherwise.

You're tired of hearing the phrase "Do what it takes."

But the question remains: are you willing to do what is necessary?

[ Fade in to an EPW set, a black backdrop with a run down chain link fence. A huge banner with the EPW logo hangs in the middle of the backdrop. Standing in front of it is EPW World Heavyweight Champion Beast, his EPW Title around his waist. ]

Beast: Well, I guess I just learned a little bit about who it really is I'm stepping into the ring with this week.

A cold, unfeeling, human.

Tell me something, Dis...

Have you never been angry? Have you never been so pissed off that you just finally had to let it out? It's been like I've always said since day 1, Dis. I wear my heart on my sleeve. I'm a passionate, emotional, amped up mother trucker, and if some sonofab*tch like Dan Ryan pushes me over the edge, then so be it.

I apologize if that spoils your vision of me, Dis.

Is that a flaw? Does the fact that I, unlike some of the robots around here, bother to show some emotion make me weaker because of it?

I'd say exactly the opposite.

Ask Christian Sands what happens when someone pisses me off. That's what kicked off this whole adventure with me as the EPW World Heavyweight Champion.

You spent an awful lot of time on one piece of strategy. You've got it all figured out, haven't you? You figure that Beast is going to be so worried about Dan Ryan at ringside that I'll be distracted enough for you to take me out?

If that's what it takes for you to stand across the ring from me, Dis... if that's what your plan is - relying on the actions of someone else to gain you victory - then you don't even deserve to stand in the same ring as the World Champion.

But Dis, before you go claiming victory, perhaps you should simply watch the tape of last week's match. Beast vs. Melton. Ryan was running all kinds of distractions, and at the end of the night, Melton was still lying on his back in the middle of the ring.

So much for your strategy.

It's just too bad that Ryan, big man that he his, couldn't take someone standing up and getting in his face.

If you're going to beat me this week, Dis, it's going to take a lot more than Dan Ryan and a big red X on the Roulette wheel to earn this World Championship.

Am I willing to do what is necessary?

Just watch.

A toy shelf in the local Toys-R-Us, filled horizontally with robot figurines and learning toys.

I'm going to save us both the trouble of speculation, Beast, because conjecturing whether or not Joey Melton would have been put down for the clean count of three will do us no good when it's very much after the fact.

I will merely say that man cannot live without self-control.

Yes, you are an admirable man, passionate about his job and his livelihood. But at what point did you allow your passions to be exploited so much so that you cannot keep your emotions in check?

For someone who seemingly wants to be the better man, you're not quite following through on your aim. You're falling just a bit short; throwing up bricks instead of hitting the center of the backboard for an easy lay-up.

Contrary to your preceptions, I am not an animatronic cyborg that is without feeling. However, it is my belief that the right amount of emotion shown--and the right amount of emotion not shown--leads to the very disalarming nature that leaves everyone guessing. It is in the things that are said, and in the things left unsaid, that help to make up the mettle of a man.

To put it frankly, you've already shown your hand before you could even put on your poker face.

What good would asking your collegues do me if I already know what happens when you become angry?

You lose focus.

You become enraged.

You destroy things.

Here we see the violence inherent in the system.

At what point did you think that I wouldn't have figured this out on my own?

To ask around would leave the impression that I am ill prepared to face you, and in this type of environment one must control the upper hand at all costs. You've already shown what happens when the upper hand is lost.

You don't get a decisive win, instead you get DQed.

Bravo. Melton still lays a claim to this World Title, and it's all because of your brashness for not getting the job done like you should have.

Now, I will be left to pick up the pieces of your downfall. You've left me with little recourse otherwise.

It is the unfortunate happenstance that the Wheel beat Clapper and not myself, but I would much rather have that asterisk next to the W in my win column than the asterisk that will be next to the L in your loss column after this Pay-Per-View.

*Emotionally Discharged Downfall

Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character, and the greatest weakness of all is the great fear of appearing weak.

Think on this Beast, before you take your next step.

And tread lightly.
