Hey there Defiant ones,

In a stray late night conversation, I mentioned to Justin that I thought that since fewer and fewer people want to write matches for handlers who often don't bother to read matches, that there could be a way to run an efed without actually producing shows--but instead, concentrate on a show that would talk about the storylines and angles involved in the unproduced shows and show only "highlight clips" from those matches. Something like a "Pardon The Interruption" for e-wrestling.

I also said that I'd probably never do it, though, because I've never been good at collecting handlers for an e-fed project.

Justin said that might be a neat idea for a secondary show...for Defiance.

And that resonated with me. So, while I wasn't busy writing the 437,249th Kiri promo for EVO-8...I threw a "proof of concept" show together on a blog. Now, the formatting is ugly and I'd like to include more graphic elements to break up the wall of text...but, you can see what I have in mind.

Justin said to go ahead and post this here. Good or bad, I'd appreciate your thoughts.

This wouldn't replace anything. This would enhance the things that are happening. (I think.)

Jeff and I both enjoyed it, and with some clean up I think it can be an excellent feature for DEF.

Now, we'd really like to hear some roster feedback to decide if we're going to do this or not.

Jesus, you bastards can be quiet and boring...

This is pretty solid. There are a few things that need work. Get on AIM and get at me.

A one on one interview segment would be cool. I'd totally be down to help write an interview with Box.

You could write up the questions and send them to the interviewee, they could answer them and send them back via PM or something. Then just edit it all together.

Generally speaking, I like it.

Aside from the formatting being brutal enough to take something away from it (which we're ignoring right now), the only real complaint I had is that I'm not sure I get enough differences between the two announcers. Yes, both Cornheiser and the other guy are blunt and to the point, as they have to be...but they're different. The anarky/order point is a good start, but they need to be more different methinks. Maybe that will shine through when you talk about real angles, as I started to see some of it at the end in the predictions.

I worry about your workload and burnout, but I trust you enough to assess your own workload needs and tail back if you need. Kiri's been a welcome character and I don't want to see him suffer over this show.

And I'd love to be involved with something like this...even if Evan beat me to the first interview, I'll happily take a Five Minute Match and/or Interview as well.

I appreciate the feedback. It's helping put this idea into perspective.

FORMATTING: I wanted some way to represent the back and forth nature of the show, but I don't think changing the alignments of the hosts works. As I told Justin, I miss the days when you could just put a complete web design on a site like Hypermart and have full control over what's on the screen--but, doing this on the cheap means working with less-than-vibrant blog based options. (What I would love is a site based on an interior frame--with a side bar down the edge, where if you clicked on the topic in the side bar, you'd go to that argument...just like the PTI show does with its rundown sidebar. If I did that, I could represent the back & forth nature graphically... Ahhhhh, a boy can dream.)

CHARACTERIZATIONS: I agree with you...and I'd hope that the characters would flesh out over a couple of episodes. This was whipped together quickly as a proof of concept, less as the finest example of my writing ability. One thing that I notice, reading it now, was how influenced I was by the actual PTI that was on while I was writing this up--and Wilbon was decidedly the more aggressive with his opinions...which, it turn, made Clinton Steel the more aggressive (especially in the Report Card game) in Defiance:Battleground...when it is more likely that "Brutal" Lee Frank will be the one who has the stronger opinions, character-wise.

WORKLOAD: What? You think I can't handle writing 12rps in a week and a full length enhancement show every week? ;) Maybe this is exactly what I need...like the weighted chains put on Eric Idle in "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen."
Your concern is both noted and appreciated. It's also perceptive. Again, this idea came from a "if I was a fedhead, is there an out of the box idea for making everything work better?" place...but that wouldn't be how I would be putting the idea into action here in DEF. There may be times when Battleground goes on vacation...but, I think once the concept is understood, I could write these things pretty quickly (with few stage directions getting in the way of the dialogue.)
