I couldn't sleep again last night. It's really only happened with any sense of regularity since I started wrestling for New Frontier Wrestling, but it's happening often enough to bother me. I suppose I should be grateful, I've had no problems before the big matches, just after them.
Yes, at this point, I consider every match big. Fans are fickle these days, and all it'll take is a quick reversal of my winning streak (of two! woo hoo!) to get myself booted out of the company. I know it's not that simple, and I know Craig Miles will book me at any show that I want to wrestle on, but I'd prefer to do well than to not.
In equally shocking news, I wear a mask when I wrestle.
Fortunately, when I stay at Rosalyn's place, she's just two blocks down from my favorite gym, so I had somewhere to go to clear my head. Yeah, right, clear my head. That won't happen at least until the Grand Prix is over.
At that point, I'll be the man, or I'll be a joke. Either way, my opponents will no longer remind me how mediocre I am, and I won't need to feel like I have to prove anything to anyone.
How funny is that, it took me three, four months to get my first victory here in New Frontier Wrestling, and my opponents suddenly shifted their game to remind me that I can just as easily be knocked from the top of the mountain, that I've gotten cocky with a single raise of the hand, and that I'm inevitably going to be broken?
Last I looked, I'm about fifty feet off the ground, and Mount Frontier is more chilling than the North Face of Everest.
What is it about me that's polarized so many people? Why have I managed to annoy every other wrestler on this roster, or close enough to everyone that it might as well be true?
Maybe they'd tell me I'm trying too hard to be one of the 'good guys' or I've got little to no humility. Maybe they'd tell me that I'm a disaster waiting to happen, instead of an over - hyped megastar not living up to his potential I'm supposed to be this underground grassroots ascension and I don't have the goods to carry it.
Maybe nothing, they don't get me. No problem there, sometimes I don't get me. But it's going to get interesting in the next few weeks, as the Grand Prix rumbles on and I find myself at the top of the scores. At that point I'll probably be an overconfident little pissant who's begging for someone to knock me off my high horse.
I don't care if I win or lose. I think that's the part that Varga and the others can't seem to wrap their heads around. I know I'm a better wrestler, in the air, on the mat, wherever they want to go, than at least ninety percent of the roster, and I can say that without any shred of ego. The wins will come. I don't need to have overblown success right now, right away, to be happy. I don't need to show 'attitude' with a chair, or prove how 'edgy' I am with a stream of four letter words to get over.
I'm already over.
And I'm going to be on top of the wrestling world, now or a year from now, or five years from now. I'm patient, and I'll wait for whatever opportunities come.
There's always another day. Win or lose, there's always another day.
