"The Kochi Cannibal" Freddie Sagawa vs Shamon
Shamon's still in this? Comedy second promo and Freddie... tries his damdest to counteract Shaman's oddities with his own. Glossing over the moonbabble, I'm afraid this is goreshock for the sake of goreshock. It's practically first half reasonable points to a promo, second half let's add a ton of crazy **** for the sake of craziness. At the end of the day... how much of a promo war can you win with only minimal appearences from the main character, the wrestler himself? Yes Cameron does a lot of heavy lifting but we're supposed to buy into Freddie Sagawa and he's hardly there. If I were writing a Paul Hayman expy and attempting to sell the dangerousness of a character who had minimal tv time, I'd go full over-the-top with the implied violence to really sell the concept of "most dangerous character imaginable by man". Because imagining Freddie Sagawa is all I can do right now. If nothing else, it'd serve as a good counter to Shamon's antics. Predicting Shamon but wouldn't b shocked if Freddie won this.

Okay. Lets back off Spooky now and try to get this thread back on track. Afterall he made so many good points. For example ...
I'm afraid this is goreshock for the sake of goreshock.

and follows that up with ...

If I were writing a Paul Hayman expy and attempting to sell the dangerousness of a character who had minimal tv time, I'd go full over-the-top with the implied violence to really sell the concept of "most dangerous character imaginable by man".

Oh wait ... More contradictory bull****. Carry on kids. Carry on.

Re: ULTRATITLE Rd. 3 Br. 3+4 Unofficial Post-RP Predictions Thread!

Fine, let's see if I can piss anyone off.

Bracket 3

Sean Edmunds vs The Phantom Republican

Call me crazy, but with all the people complaining about how Zero is barely mentioning wrestling and not mentioning his opponents at all, seems to me like TPR should be getting that same criticism thrown against his first RP. Sean Edmunds follows up by mixing things up a bit. Speaking from someone who's been on the same side of "There's Nothing Wrong With That", I really dug his deciding to lay that out in his RP. He hit the points too. TPR follows up with a short and sweet trash talk piece that someone should break down into a "how to brag about ones self" guide. And Edmunds comes back with a solid rebuttal. Edmunds third I thought was a clever way to put a cap on it, lambasting TPR's gimmick without outright insulting it. Even if I'm going to be nice and acknowledge TPR's non-wrestling-talking first RP, Edmunds wins, and impresses the hell out of me.

Edmunds over TPR 6.5/3.5

Eli Flair vs Eric Dane

I talk to Dane's handler like... all the time. And we've been through the argument about whether Eli Flair should have heard of Eric Dane or not. My take on the "I've never heard of you" argument in general is that any wrestler who would use it is being irresponsible. Anyway, Dane gave up half way through the RP period, so I'll just say that the first RPs from each cancelled each other out and then Flair laid down 2 solid RPs which went unanswered.

Flair over Dane 8/2

Kendal Codine vs Mikey Massacre

In all honesty, I found this battle pretty underwhelming. In his first, Codine came across like every "World's Cockiest Heel" on Geocities. Massacre does a pretty good job spinning it all off in his first RP. Codine's second works pretty well, establishes that he's not really overlooking Mikey. Mikey's second showed some character. Codine's third... introduces Lecompte, "one of the most crooked, yet intelligent masterminds in wrestling", but then Lecompte comes across like a lackey, not a mastermind. And then another geocities-esque cheap shot with the "LOL best of Mikey Massacre DVD its a short comedy film". And then Massacre's third is an acceptable but unremarkable affair.

Massacre over Codine 6/4

And to the both of them, quit saying "promo" so much. Yeah, everyone knows that we're all trying to out-promo the other guy in this game, but no need to be so blatant about it.

Kiyomori vs Boogie Smallz

I _could_ _not_ finish Kiyomori's first RP. It just dragged and went nowhere and repeated itself. The long italicized narrator intros are completely superfluous, they add nothing, and 95% of the time using a partial narrator is going to cause me to heavily mark down the person who used one. The only real problem I noticed with Boogie was that he said he didn't speak in Ebonics when he does a little bit. But he doesn't rely on it. The other thing that impressed me right away about Boogie was that when I read his promos, I hear a real person talking. It's very hard to get natural sounding dialogue in an RP - Boogie nailed it - big ups. Also, Boogie pretty much cleaned house on strength of argument.

Boogie over Kiyomori 7.5/2.5

Don't know that I ever said "promo" in any of my roleplays. Perhaps people are reading something that I'm missing.

Over the top /= gore for the sake of gore!Going over the top is a tool used in comedy, it means going beyond what is readily found in nature! And don't be disengenuous by ignoring how I spoke of implied violence rather than showing actual violent images (yes, opened up corpses are violent images).

So.... so far we've established two things in our 44 post feedback thread.

1. Spooky Doom thinks some stuff.

2. Other people think his thoughts are ghey.

Anyone else want to post on anything other than the above two?

Also, Ernie.... oh Ernie, when you drunk post at almost three in the morning, don't think for a second that as an admin, I can't see it, and furthermore, don't think for a second that I will not point and laugh at you and mock you with it for as long as I know you from here on out.

I just did a search of the word promo. We each used the word promo a couple of times, but I am sure it wasn't above the median of all RPs. But I will definitely watch my use of the word promo. Sometimes, though, when we're promoing, it is tough not to use the word promo, you know?

I'll be honest, I'm still not seeing where I used the word "promo" in any of my three roleplays (granted, I just did a quick scan on the small screen of my Blackberry).

Either way, it was great roleplaying against you.

Re: ULTRATITLE Rd. 3 Br. 3+4 Unofficial Post-RP Predictions Thread!

I double checked to make sure I wasn't crazy. Codine said the following lines with 'promo' in them.

"That part is evident, as I’m already in his head. It’s evident that I’m his first real challenge in this tournament and it shows, as he stutters and stammers with each sentence, repeatedly changing his stance promo after promo."

"REBEL Pro is near and dear to your heart, wouldn’t you say Mikey? After all, you proudly display their likeness in your promos."

And in fairness the second sentence is probably a legit use of the word. But in both cases I'd avoid the word promo. It's just one of those things that sort of jarringly reminds me I'm reading an RP. If I have to refer to it, I'd go with 'promotional footage'.

Or maybe it's just one of those things I care about that no one else does.

I've talked to Justine (Dane's handler) about this as well, as we're feuding in NFW. It's a tough thing, because I understand where Pete is coming from - Eli probably never HAS heard of Dane. I've always hated the "What?? WHO ARE YOU AGAIN??" retort when guys are in the same league, or even in the same circuit, but Dane made his bones in what is for us a pretty obscure place. What I did with Strife is basically acknowledge Dane as a world class talent without directly acknowledging his accomplishments. I dunno if Strife actually said "YOU'RE A WORLD CLASS TALENT MY BOY!" but that's how we're operating.

Promotional footage would sound TERRIBLE.

I think the intermittent use of the word makes sense given that in this version of pro wrestling, dudes are sending TONS of promos back and forth, way way more than in actual pro wrestling.

That said, I don't think it's an entirely unfair statement to make, but a little nitpicky, given the number of times it was used. :)

Just for comparison sake, Eli Flair owns a cell phone that he has never turned on, and has an email address that he has never checked. And I mean ever. To be honest, he would have had the same reaction to Joe the Plumber.

Re: ULTRATITLE Rd. 3 Br. 3+4 Unofficial Post-RP Predictions Thread!

SO here are my thoughts on these brackets. Figured I would post and get the topic rolling where it should.

BRACKET THREE
PHANTOM REPUBLICAN VS EDMUNDS

The perils of not facing anybody....literally....until this round. TPR is a great character and I have enjoyed him a ton in this tournament. However, Edmunds' stuff resonated more with me. I will admit the third roleplay didn't flick my switch at all from Edmunds...but it didn't have to as I felt he was on the edge better after 2 each and he was the only 3rd....so that clinched it for me.

Edmunds 6-4

ELI FLAIR VS ERIC DANE

What happened here? This could have been the match of the entire round in ANY bracket. It had that kind of potential and after 1 RP each....it was a solid 5-5 for me with no clear advantage. Then Flair came out with 2 more solid RPs....the last one was really good and I enjoyed it most. Nothing from Dane. I'm not sure if it was duty to Defiance (Justin mentioned the shows were disappointingly 4 weeks late) or just a yellow streak, but Dane was never heard from again.

Flair 8-2

MASSACRE VS CODINE

This one was tough. I liked both guys and their RPs were a stark contrast in how they presented themselves. I think anyone who misses the points Codine was making and simplifies them to seem smart is an utter retard...and my stance on intergender is well known, so I'm not getting into that. However, I think this match....while even in about every aspect in my mind....has to go to the man who seemed to frame the argument all the way through.

5-5 (Edge to Codine)

BOOGIE VS KIYOMORI

This one is bittersweet for me because I know, if not for a problem with his internet, this is Jesse Ramey here in this match vs Kiyomori. Even more so is the fact that he would have won! Kiyomori's RPs were both LONG, which isn't a problem my itself....but they were self-involved to the point of difficulty. We all write RPs with actions and descriptions within them. These had thoughts mixed in, the italics served to confuse rather than clarify/define and it all turned into a jumbled mess for me. Biggie wasn't overwhelming and has become a fun character in this tournament. I liked what I read and felt he did a better job of making me believe he could and would win.

Boogie 6-4

BRACKET FOUR
SHAMON VS SAGAWA

Shamon just irks me as a character. The interludes in song....the fact that every time I read his name I can hear Michael Jackson's singing voice in my head....it all annoys the living crap out of me. Yet...the writing is really solid and it is written well as to create such a reaction (at least I hope that is the aim if not....Shamon is the Vicki Guererro of this tourney...getting X-Pac heat from me, if you will). I like Sagawa's approach, always have. I love that we finally get to see him with Waubash and hear him actually speak. Both of these guys did a great job, and in the end....I'm giving the edge to the character that DOESN'T make my stomach curdle.

5-5 (Edge to Sagawa)

SAVONAROLA VS DEACON

I really liked the second RP from Vincenzo. I really liked the first RP from Deacon. I REALLY wish these two had done one more each! lol These two both did well, and I will admit that in this battle for certain....if one of them would have posted a third...that would have won it. I think in the end, I liked Vincenzo's 2nd a little more than the others...so I give the edge to the best of the bunch here.

5-5 (Edge to Savonarola)

HARMEN VS WINDHAM

Amazing match here. Simply amazing. I admit that Windham ascended to my pick to win it all after we were allowed to edit and Dan Ryan bowed out in Rd 1....that didn't factor here as I read. This match also had a quirky order trade as Harmen went second, but also went 4th and 5th. This allowed Windham to have the first AND last words in the battle. Usually not a smart tactic overall and I wonder if time issues played a role in that or not OOC. In the end, I liked one guy slightly more and it sucks because it royally screws my challonge bracket!

5-5 (Edge to Harmen)

GORDON VS ROBERTS

This was interesting. A second generation wrestler taking on a verifiable sociopath. The added layer of the father of said second-generation star being pretty sadistic in his heyday and knowing that the son could snap and fill those shoes as well is there also. I think Gordon did a good job of deflecting much of what Roberts threw at him, but the attack of yelling "psycho" just doesn't strike me as a great return fire vs a sociopath. The best way to understand a sociopath is to watch "The Dark Knight" and the scene where Joker talks to Harvey in the hospital. "I'm like a dog chasing a car....I wouldn't know what to do if I ever caught it." Later Alfred says "Some men just like to watch the world burn." It takes a special person to take down a sociopath like Roberts....and Gordon showed he isn't prepared.

Roberts 6-4 (Probably closer to 6.5 - 3.5)

The order in Troy/Harmen was because of timing. Both me and Ford put up our last RPs Sunday night at about the same time.

That's a little nitpicky, don't you think? I'm not sure that I've ever seen/heard a professional wrestler refer to a promo as "promotional footage". In both cases, I was referencing his latest roleplay (i.e. promo), so I'm not exactly sure what you're looking for in exchange.

^Bingo!! Anyone that has read the roleplays from the start of the tournament (including the storyline building in the hype section) would see that Codine started out with little to no confidence and is slowly building back to being himself (a heel). The judges have been there from the start and that's the progression of the character (or at least my intentions).

Promo is a television word, it's been used in actual wrestling before, so in my view it's kosher for RPs.

I agree. I don't feel that promo should be an off limits word. After all, it is short for promotion ... and that is exactly what the guys are doing. Promoting themselves.

Now where is Chris in all this? Come on Hopper, this is your type of discussion ;)

I wills ay this, even though I see Pete's threat, so this isn't really crossing him :p
Wrestling SHOULD NOT be one of them.
That line... followed the typical remarks made about women in a 'mans world'. It wasn't meant in the way spooky and others took it -- and even if it was... this.is.a.HOBBY.
